Rina
Rina | Yong-Suk Kang
1 post | 1 read | 2 to read
Rina is a defector from a country that might be North Korea, traversing an "empty and futile" landscape. Along the way, she is forced to work at a chemical plant, murders a few people, becomes a prostitute, runs a lucrative bar, and finds a solace in a motley family of wanderers all as disenfranchised as she. Brutal and unflinching, with elements of the mythic and grotesque interspersed with hard-edged realism, Rina is a pioneering work of Korean postmodernism.

There's definitely #dustinthewind in the arid landscape that Rina, on the run from unnamed country "P" (but which has definite parallels to N.Korea), traverses as a refugee. She makes her way across borders and life becomes increasingly precarious. This book has a fractured, disjointed style that some call "postmodern", so it might not be for everyone, but I found it a bleak yet moving read about refugees and displaced workers. #rockinmay @Cinfhen

batsy I had a proof copy for review; this is the actual cover. The Litsy database only has the proper cover and info for the author's name spelled this way, but I think the actual spelling is Kang Young-sook. 8y
batsy Oh my god, of course the actual spelling is on the cover! 🙄 forgive me, it's been one of those days... 8y
Cinfhen Sounds fascinating, although not sure I can read anymore bleak books for awhile 8y
