I‘ve read this before but paid more attention this time. A few years back I read, then watched the tsunami book and film The Impossible. Surviving, then rebuilding after this kind of event is monumental. The village elder reiterates “We love life bc we live in danger. We do not fear death bc we understand that life and death are necessary to each other.â€

“The Big Wave†by Pearl S. Buck

Child Study Association‘s Children‘s Book Award

The Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winning author Buck shares a story of fiction with a look into traditional historical Japanese culture. Kino and Jiya experience themes of overcoming tragedy and bravery. It is a short easy read that elementary students could tackle.

ToddSalerno Reading guides and teacher guide are thorough. They break down sections of the text, include vocabulary building, and writing exercises. (ESOL 15- Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again.) (UDL 9.3 Develop self-assesment and reflection.)

DrSpalding You have done such a nice job selecting a wide variety of books. You know the importance of books being mirrors yet also windows to the world. Teaching vocabulary as you know is extremely important for comprehension. Your posts contain the required elements. 4y

This was a nice short book that teaches about tragedy and how someone overcomes it. This book tells the story about Kino and Jiya and how they went about life after the big wave. Good book for younger readers ğŸ‘

The Big Wave | Pearl S. Bück

"Ah, no one knows who makes evil storms," his father replied. "We only know that they come. When they come we must live through them as bravely as we can, and after they are gone, we must feel again how wonderful is life. Every day of life is more valuable now than it was before the storm."
