Symposium
Symposium | By Plato

Symposium is a philosophical text by Plato. It concerns itself at one level with the genesis, purpose and nature of love, and is the origin of the concept of Platonic love. Love is examined in a sequence of speeches by men attending a symposium, or drinking party. Each man must deliver an encomium, a speech in praise of Love (Eros). The party takes place at the house of the tragedian Agathon in Athens. Socrates in his speech asserts that the highest purpose of love is to become a philosopher or, literally, a lover of wisdom. The dialogue has been used as a source by social historians seeking to throw light on life in ancient Athens, in particular upon sexual behavior, and the symposium as an institution.

I have not been as active here in recent months due to a three month run of working on shows. It kept me busy but also meant I was not able to scroll through here as much as I love to. Hopefully I can balance things a bit better in the coming year, and not keep myself so busy. Also, a friend asked me to be in the adaptation of this as Diotima. It is gonna be a lot but I am excited to dig into this script.

PippoRanito Diotima is awesome for her role in holding back the plague in Athens! Good luck in your role! 😁 I hope you and your group will be successful! 6y
TsundokuAleax @PippoRanito oh, can you give me more info on this? My director had trouble finding any other reference to her in ancient texts. Also, I am loving her part in the script. It is gonna be a bear to memorialize though. 6y
PippoRanito In the symposium, Socrates says that he learned what "love" is from Diotima. And that Diotima, in urging the citizens of Athens to do some sacrifices, delayed the onset of the plague. ? Let me quote the full passage. 6y
PippoRanito "And now I shall let you alone, and proceed with the discourse upon Love which I heard one day from a Mantinean woman named Diotima: in this subject she was skilled, and in many others too; for once, by bidding the Athenians offer sacrifices ten years before the plague, she procured them so much delay in the advent of the sickness. Well, I also had my lesson from her in love-matters. . ." 6y
TsundokuAleax Ah, okay. I forgot that part. I read through the script and have been focusing on my lines since. I thought maybe there was another reference to her outside this. Thank you for reminding me. 6y

Hello 👋 Yesterday I managed to read quite a bit from Secret Lives of the First Ladies. I‘m hoping to finish that maybe today, but most likely tomorrow.

This is a picture of two Plato books. In case you didn‘t already know, I was a philosophy major in college.

QOTD: Do you like philosophy? Who‘s your favorite philosopher?
AOTD: I love philosophy since I majored in it. My favorite philosopher will always be Simone de Beauvoir.
