Oracle Bones | Peter Hessler
5 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
A century ago, outsiders saw China as a place where nothing ever changes. Today the country has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. In Oracle Bones, Peter Hessler explores the human side of China's transformation, viewing modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

This book showed up in a subscription box (The Wordy Traveler), otherwise I would never have read it - but I‘m so glad I did, because I learned a lot about this part of the world. Ordinarily I prefer #ownvoices, and luckily the author provides several suggestions in the back of the edition I read. Worth the time. Also, narrative nonfiction is a thing that I now know I appreciate. 👍🏼

Books. Candy. Reading socks. Here we go. 💪🏻👑😍

WhatWouldJaneDo Are those hand knit socks? 6y
JSW @WhatWouldJaneDo yes! A gift - my wrists don‘t like repetitive stuff like knitting, sadly. 6y
WhatWouldJaneDo @JSW they're lovely! I'm a knitter, hoping to try some socks once I finally finish the sweater I'm in a slump with. 6y

Goal: finish this today! I‘m still off my reading groove, due to a roller coaster of anxiety, and I‘m trying to get back to the usual. This book is fascinating but I‘ve been stringing it along for weeks and I need a clean slate for March.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve been there, and sometimes nothing feels better than finishing and having a clean slate! 6y
JSW @Riveted_Reader_Melissa it doesn‘t happen often, but when it does, it‘s aggravating to feel so stuck! 😑❤️ 6y

This came in a subscription box that Mr. JSW signed me up for, and initially I didn‘t want to read it. But now, after reading Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, I‘m interested in more perspectives. Reading can be such a rabbit hole.

Kristy_K This looks interesting! What subscription box was it? 6y
JSW @Kristy_K it‘s called the wordy traveler. https://www.thewordytraveler.com/ It‘s a good one! 6y
Kristy_K @JSW I‘ll check it out. Thanks! 6y

Virtually every Chinese citizen whom I came to know well was doing something technically illegal...It might be a sketchy apartment registration or a small business that bought its products from unlicensed wholesalers...late at night, there were always people out walking their dogs in Beijing, because the official dog registration was ridiculously expensive. The dogs were.. Pekingese, led by sleepy owners who snapped to alertness if they saw a cop.
