Sputniks Children
Sputniks Children: A Novel | Terri Favro
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
A literary, genre-bending novel full of heart Cult comic book creator Debbie Reynolds Biondi has been riding the success of her Cold War erainspired superhero series, Sputnik Chick: Girl with No Past, for more than 25 years. But with the comic book losing fans and Debbie struggling to come up with new plotlines for her badass, mutant-killing heroine, she decides to finally tell Sputnik Chicks origin story. Debbies never had to make anything up before and she isnt starting now. Sputnik Chick is based on Debbies own life in an alternate timeline called Atomic Mean Time. As a teenager growing up in Shipmans Corners a Rust Belt town voted by Popular Science magazine as most likely to be nuked she was recruited by a self-proclaimed time traveller to collapse Atomic Mean Time before an all-out nuclear war grotesquely altered humanity. In trying to save the world, Debbie risked obliterating everyone shed ever loved as well as her own past in the process. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 16.0px Times; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} Or so she believes . . . Present-day Debbie is addicted to lorazepam and dirty, wet martinis, making her an unreliable narrator, at best. A time-bending novel that delves into the origin story of the Girl with No Past, Sputniks Children explores what it was like to come of age in the Atomic Age.

Ooo, i love this prompt. It's amazing how your brain assumes one thing but when you actually write it down it's not at all what you thought.

4.5🌟Easily one of the best books I've read all year; can't believe it wasn't picked for the final 5 on Canada Reads. Wonderful writing. Although technically a “sci fi“ setting, the characters are so genuine & relatable I mostly forgot I was in an alt-history. I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

I also totally dig Jennie Shaw's cover art nails!! (photo credit: http://www.jennieshaw.ca/2017/04/book-review-and-cover-mani-sputniks.html)

Huge library haul this week as most of the Canada Reads longlist came in. I may not finish all these books, but they sounded good so I figured I‘d still give ‘em a try.

I also got a bit of Buddhism, Canada Reads 2011 alum ESSEX COUNTY, some poetry, and a colourful knitting book.

cleoh Love Lives Here is wonderful! 5y
Singout What a great mix! Have you got a knitting pattern picked out? 5y
xicanti @cleoh I hope it works for me! I‘m always nervous going into trans-centric narratives written by cis people. 5y

xicanti @Singout I do! There‘s a lace tank top I want to make with some self-striping rainbow yarn. 5y
Singout Wow! Sound fabulous and challenging! 5y
cleoh @xicanti that‘s very valid. The author worked very closely with her wife and daughter when writing the book, and the narrative is less about the experience of her family members transitioning and more about how the author was able to overcome her own prejudices, which was why I found it intriguing. If you have Twitter, you should check out AJK‘s page - she‘s an absolute gem! (edited) 5y
xicanti @cleoh I do like things about people dismantling their prejudices. I‘ll check out her Twitter! 5y
cleoh @xicanti looking forward to hearing your thoughts! 5y
