The Orange Fish
The Orange Fish: Stories | Carol Shields
3 posts | 3 to read
Winner of the Marian Engel Award: Passion, longing, regret, and transformation infuse these twelve tales by one of our most shrewd and skillful storytellers (Chicago Tribune) Milk Bread Beer Ice is a road trip shared by a husband and wife who no longer communicate through meaningful dialogue. Fifty-year-old Hazel is forced to enter an alien workplace after the sudden death of her husband. In Today Is the Day, the village women gather together for their annual ritual of planting blisterlilies. And Family Secrets travels to DeKalb, Illinois, and the First World War, as the narrator searches for a missing year in her mothers life . . . and unearths a surprising connection to Ernest Hemingway. From a group of musicians who discover they share more than classical Chemistry to an unhappily married couple who may get a second chance, this remarkable collection, like the ageless orange fish of the title story, is filled with the wonder and magic of everyday life.

Hit up The Bookseller, a local used book store for more books to add to my shelf to read.

Found a handful of interesting ones. Usually pick books based on what I'm feeling as of recent. How do you pick your books?

Let's play a game of Spot Sara in the Stacks. Where else would she be, but crouched beside a cart full of Canadian fiction? @shawnmooney @LeahBergen @Lindy —your influence is to blame for several purchases! 😘

LeahBergen Bahahaha!!! I love it!!! ❤️❤️ 8y
Lindy What did you get??? I'm so curious! 8y
saresmoore @Lindy I got the tagged book and an Alice Munro collection (Carried Away) from the Canadian shelf. I'm also giving you credit/blame for my recent Kate Atkinson obsession, though. I wonder if you've read it, I bought 8y

ReadingEnvy Was there a cart full of Canadian fiction in a Floridian bookstore?!? 8y
saresmoore @ReadingEnvy Yes! And the literary fiction bungalow was divided by country (or continent in the case of S. America) of author's origin. I was really impressed by the lit fic selection, considering there was a small-house-sized building devoted solely to the mystery genre. 8y
ReadingEnvy @saresmoore amazing find 8y
Lindy Alice Munro ❤️ 8y
Lindy I loved all of the mystery novels in that series that includes 8y
Lindy I've read several by Carol Shields, but not Orange Fish. You will beat me to it. 😊 8y
saresmoore @Lindy I think I would like to read the Atkinson series in order, but I got that particular one just because I really liked the cover they had. 😊 8y
Lindy @saresmoore Definitely read the series in order, because of the character development Jackson Brody goes through. 8y
LeahBergen Yes, read Atkinson in order. And I've read several Carol Shields but not that one either, @Lindy ! I'm glad that you found that "best of" edition for Alice Munro! ?? 8y
saresmoore @LeahBergen The exact one you pointed out! I knew it was meant to be as soon as I spotted it. 8y
saresmoore @Lindy @LeahBergen I will certainly take your advice! But I shall try to resist searching for the rest in matching hardcovers. 😬 8y
ValerieAndBooks Now I am more intrigued than ever to try Kate Atkinson. I'll look for her now! Does she do stand-alone novels as well? ((going to my laptop to research her backlist)) @saresmoore @Lindy @LeahBergen 8y
saresmoore @ValerieAndBooks Life After Life was INCREDIBLE! That's the one @Lindy recommended to me. 8y
LeahBergen @ValerieAndBooks Yes, I second (third?) Life After Life. Case Histories is the first of the Jackson Brodie series and it could be read as a stand-alone (to see if you like it). 8y
