Beautiful: The Life of Hedy Lamarr
Beautiful: The Life of Hedy Lamarr | Stephen Michael Shearer
4 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Hedy Lamarr's exotic beauty was heralded across Europe in the early 1930s. Yet she became infamous for her nude scenes in the scandalous movie "Ecstasy." Trapped in a marriage to one of Austria's munitions barons, a friend of Mussolini's who hid his Jewish heritage to become an "honorary Aryan" at the onset of World War II, Lamarr fled Europe for Hollywood, where she was transformed into one of film's most glamorous celebrities, appearing opposite such actors as Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, and James Stewart. As her career faded, she went from one husband to the next, her personal troubles and legal woes casting a shadow over her phenomenal intelligence and former image.Stephen Michael Shearer separates the truth from the rumors regarding the life of Hedy Lamarr, and highlights her astonishing role as inventor of a technology that has become an essential part of everything from military weaponry to today's cell phones.

#TIL in Bombshell the Hedy Lamarr Story

And she wasn‘t paid a dime for it. Experts also believe that if current trends continue, almost every person on the planet will be connected by frequency hopping (which is the basis for secure WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, cell phones, & military tech).

What an incredible story. Glad I watched it.

Crazeedi I didnt know about this till I read a book about her ideas, that the federal government reflected in ww2, then stole 5y

#nfNov watching Bombshell The Hedy Lamarr Story

#TIL I knew she was a scientist, held a patent, & her invention was the basis for WiFi. But I did not know that Hedy Lamarr was the model for Snow White and the inspiration for Catwoman. And such a complicated woman.

Megabooks I learned that listening to this book on the way to Dallas. I can‘t believe (well I can) that the government turned her away and told her to sell kisses for war bonds. And she did because she‘s a better person than they deserved! 5y
wanderinglynn @Megabooks She said that people could never get past her face. So sad because she was so intelligent. 5y
Crazeedi @Megabooks I love Mike Rowe. And I read a book about her, now I need to read this 5y

I may have to read this after watching a documentary about Hedy Lamar (called Bombshell) last night. I really feel sad that she didn‘t benefit from her invention that not only the military uses, but all of us use every time we pick up a cellphone. ☹️

This past weekend I managed for a one woman show on Hedy Lamarr. It was wonderful and a busy run that we did not expect. I personally know the actress, who wrote and stars in it. Learned a lot about Hedy and her work. She is going to Ireland next for a festival and family visit. I am very excited to see what is in the future for this show.
