There's an underground black market for arcane things. Akin to the trade in rhino horns or tigers' bones, this network traffics in remains of gryphons, faeries, goblins, and other fantastic creatures. When her fiance Vince goes missing Angela Gough, an American criminology student, discovers that he was a part of this secretive trade. It's a big-money business--shadowy, brutal, and sometimes fatal. As the trail leads her deeper into London's dark side, she crosses paths with a crime lord whose life is dedicated to collecting such relics. Then Angela discovers that some of these objects aren't as ancient as they seem. Some of them are fresh. Gripping supernatural terror launching a new trilogy by the acclaimed author of Coldbrook (-distinct, unique, and absorbing-), The Silence (-truly addictive-), and the Alien-Predator -Rage War. -Tim Lebbon's RELICS opens a darkly beautiful glimpse into another world, one lurking in the shadows, hovering at the corner of the eye. If Anne Rice and Clive Barker had written a story together, it might have looked something like this novel: richly imagined, fantastical, yet grounded in the grit and reality of modern-day London. I look forward to the wonders and terrors yet to come.---JAMES ROLLINS, New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Labyrinth -A magical, perilous drama full of characters who live and breathe, darkness you can feel...---Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Ararat -Tim Lebbon is an immense talent.---Joe R. Lansdale, creator of Hap and Leonard

And here's 20 random titles from my unread Kindle books for the June edition of #ReadYourKindle

I only finished one pick in May, and the next few days aren't likely to change that. Hoping to log at least 2 next month (and I kinda hope one of them is "Nunslinger")

Bailedbailed

I bailed 15 pages into this. It sounded like my cup of tea and then I started to read it. It's one of those books where the male author writes about a woman who only thinks about having sex with her boyfriend. Maybe she thinks about something else later in the book, but I'll never know.

Reggie I was thinking about crime fiction the other day and how some women in the stories only exist so that the strong male can rescue them. Lol crazy machismo writers. 4y
NicoleCeBallos @Reggie hahaha yeah there's a lot of it. To be fair, there's also a lot of women writers who can't write men characters without turning them into the whole Alpha, He-Man stereotype thing. 4y

Pickpick

Another great novel by Lebbon. The basic plot is that there is a secret trade in relics going on in the unseen world that thrives beneath London. Artefacts from a time long gone, priceless objects that come from mythical beasts. But are these really relics of eons ago, or more fresh....

I know that "whelmed" isn't really a feeling but that's kind of where I ended up with this. It's a horror-like thriller that has supernatural elements...sort of Dean Koontz-esque but it seemed to be missing that little extra piece I can't put my finger on. Some fairly graphic violence inside but the story just didn't grip me the way others have. I'll pick up the sequel to see if things improve.

If you need a quick read that is reasonably entertaining to forget a bad day or the newsfeed, this does the job. Boyfriend disappears, heroine studying criminology searches and plot rapidly turns supernatural. Reads just like a TV show, and probably wants to be one.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

I picked this up while I was in an urban fantasy mood because the blurb mentions a "black market for arcane things" and that kind of thing spells "insta-buy" to me. But while the plot's fun and the worldbuilding functional, it's still lacks oomph. Guess it might be because the characters are really bland. Hopefully things get better in later books.
