This was a quick read for me, I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days. The storytelling is tight and uses multiple perspectives so it feels fresh with every chapter. While, for the most part, the pacing and characterization is flawless, the third act is weak. It feels as though Doyle had a different ending planned and was pushed to change it by the publisher.

A group of teenagers from the Dublin suburbs get wasted everyday to quell the feelings of the nothingness that the void/charade of the world we live in gives them, set against the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. Talk about a just say no to drugs and alcohol book if I‘ve ever read one. I will admit I was laughing halfway through the book because the author was throwing a lot at the reader. But somehow the back half gets down to business and I 👇🏼

Reggie became invested. I know it‘s a pick when I wondered about the future of some of the characters. Thanks @Centique for the rec. I‘m still a little shocked you managed to read this. Lol Also, after all that are you a little disappointed we didn‘t find out what they got on their Leaving Certs? Lol (edited) 7y
TrishB This is a Joy Division song. Any link ? 7y
Reggie @TrishB maybe just that the kids love punk music. 7y

Centique @Reggie oh thank god you liked it! I‘m surprised I read it too!! 😂😂 7y
Reggie @Centique once the snuff film showed up I had a big WHAT?!!!! moment, but that Kearney, he was a sociopath, and then it turns out there probably wasn‘t a snuff film, it was all in his head. And then he couldn‘t kill just regular people. I feel like the author was always going 100. It was a steep descent into chaos that I couldn‘t look away from. I really liked the ending. 7y
Centique @Reggie that was my WHAT THE moment too. That piece has stayed in my head ever since and also the boy being pushed down the stairs. I couldn‘t remember if the ending made up for the horror of that, but now that you‘re reminding me, I think it did. So good to get someone else‘s take on this book R - and man you read fast! 🙌🙌 7y
Centique Have you read this one? Very different but also a look inside a type of violence/a nihilistic mind maybe?. I can handle books like this better where it‘s quieter and more reflective, still disturbing though. 7y
CoverToCoverGirl I‘m a little hesitant to read this but if I come across a copy of it I may give it a try. 7y
Reggie @CoverToCoverGirl unnng I don‘t think this is for 98% of Litsy. There is a Trigger subject like every couple of pages. The author goes out of his way to push buttons. It was 298 pgs. and on every page there is mention of drinking alcohol, smoking something, or swallowing pills. Enter at your own risk. 7y

#getmovin #no

This is probably the most disturbing book I ever read. I was saying “no, no, no, no....” all the way through it. It‘s 2003 and the three male protagonists have graduated from high school in Ireland. They‘re aimless and listless and each of them will take a different path to find something to fill the emptiness - drugs, love, violence. One million trigger warnings. Beautiful writing but I‘d rather not have it all in my head!

Centique Having said that you might be able to stomach it @Reggie But I prefer something like 7y
Reggie Challenge accepted @Centique I will read this next. 7y
Centique @Reggie oh wow! Now I‘m gonna be biting my nails and hoping you like it. But it would be so good to hear someone else‘s take on it ✌️ 7y

Cinfhen I‘m excited to hear @Reggie thoughts! Although I found your summary excellent! 7y
Reggie What do you have me reading? Lol. Getting high to see aborted fetuses and now I‘m pretty sure Kearney killed a homeless guy. They‘re starting to make ME feel out of my skin. 7y
Centique @Reggie ha! It‘s not just me then. This is some freaky stuff. 😳😳 7y
Reggie Yeah, I‘m getting darker Trainspotting vibes with less likable characters. We‘ll see how the rest of it goes. 7y
