Charm City: A Tess Monaghan Novel
Charm City: A Tess Monaghan Novel | Laura Lippman
6 posts | 14 read | 5 to read
Reporter-turned-p.i. Tess Monaghan loves every inch of her native Baltimore a quirky city where baseball reigns, and homicide seems to be the second most popular sport. Business tycoon Wink Wynkowski wants to change all of that by bringing pro-basketball back to town a laudable mission that s greeted with widespread cheers . . . and a muckraking front page expose of his past in the Baltimore Beacon-Light. The Blight s surprised editors are sure they killed the piece. Instead, the piece kills Wynkowski, who s discovered asphyxiated in his garage with his car s engine running. Now the paper wants former newshound Tess to track down the rogue computer hacker whose prank took a human life. But there s more than cyber-crime involved here and Tess is about to discover firsthand that trying to stay alive in Charm City is murder these days."

1. I like many different kids of settings, but wherever it is I like to get a real sense of the place. That‘s more important than whether the author changes a street name or moves a park a couple blocks away.
2. It doesn‘t matter as long as the character is not flat.

This really was just so-so for me. I‘ve not read any others in the Tess Monaghan series (this is #2), but I have read at least one other Laura Lippman that I enjoyed. But this one just struck me as very mediocre. Somewhat choppy at times, I thought maybe I was listening to the abridged version, but no.

Enjoying the Tess Monaghan series. Picked up this one (book 2) on audio and enjoyed every minute. Likely to pick up #3 with an audible credit. #MountTBR

cathysaid Yes! This was a delightful recent discovery for me as well. Such dry, quirky wit. 6y

Samplergal Ah....Baltimore. I love Laura Lippmann and her Baltimore books. If you don't know her, she is quite entertaining! Missing Baltimore when I read her books. 7y
amvs1111 Thanks for the nudge toward this author. Baltimore stole my heart during my internship there. ♥️ 7y
GripLitGrl @Samplergal YES i love when authors have a city as a character in books as well. It always adds to a story & characters for me. 7y

I found this second installment a little disappointing. Some clunky dialog, a daft side-plot and too many scenes that were poorly glued together rather than seamlessly constructed to move the story forwards. I'll probably try one or two more, but this was not great.
