The Invaders | Karolina Waclawiak
8 posts | 16 read | 10 to read
Over the course of a summer in a wealthy Connecticut community, a forty-something woman and her college-age stepsons lives fall apart in a series of violent shocks.Cheryl has never been the right kind of country-club wife. She's always felt like an outsider, and now, in her mid-fortiesfacing the harsh realities of aging while her marriage disintegrates and her troubled stepson, Teddy, is kicked out of collegeshe feels cast adrift by the sparkling seaside community of Little Neck Cove, Connecticut. So when Teddy shows up at home just as a storm brewing off the coast threatens to destroy the precarious safe haven of the cove, she joins him in an epic downward spiral. The Invaders, a searing follow-up to Karolina Waclawiaks critically acclaimed debut novel, How to Get Into the Twin Palms, casts a harsh light on the glossy sheen of even the most perfect lives in America's exclusive beach communities. With sharp wit and dark humor, The Invaders exposes the lies and insecurities that run like faultlines through our culture, threatening to pitch bored housewives, pill-popping children, and suspicious neighbors headlong into the suburban abyss.

A few selections from Read It Forward's "21 Novels about Being Trapped in Suburbia."
There's lots of books about sad white people in #thesuburbs. ? Not a genre I like, although I've read some of these including the tagged book which was awful.

WhatWouldJaneDo I read Tampa a few months ago. I liked it but man was it messed up. Kind of impressed by how far the author was willing to go. 6y
Mrsann2000 I agree with “awful”! I read a couple of these and that description fits. 6y
CarolynM I liked Belong To Me a lot 6y

ErikasMindfulShelf I really liked Belong to Me too @CarolynM 6y
CarolynM @irre I've enjoyed all Marissa de los Santos's books 6y
merelybookish @WhatWouldJaneDo I have heard Tampa is an interesting read! 6y
merelybookish @Mrsann2000 It's mostly that these books tend to be people by awful characters. Revolutionary Road is a well-written but so miserable to read. 6y
merelybookish @CarolynM @irre The description sounds interesting! Better than The Corrections, that's for sure! 🙂 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf Me too @CarolynM She‘s an auto-buy for me. 6y
CarolynM I bailed on The Corrections at the 100 page Mark - I just didn't care. Marissa de los Santos's characters are much more engaging. Belong To Me is the sequel to 6y
Cinfhen @WhatWouldJaneDo I totally agree!!! Tampa made my favorite reads of 2018 😜 6y
Reggie Oh, I loved the tagged book. I agree, everyone in there was unlikable but I couldn‘t look away. 6y
merelybookish @Reggie It was a #tob pick which is why I read it. It made me realize I needed a break from reading about rich white people. 6y
TheKidUpstairs "Sad white people in the suburbs" is definitely an overdone genre. But every once in a while there's a gem. 6y

I'm struggling a but with the review for this one. It has a lot of rich people problems but also social commentary. The story itself was....odd? Interesting, and I liked the style and the voices of the characters, but something is holding me back from giving it a pick. Here's a picture of ridiculous dog ears to look at while I think about it lol.

Wow, as much as I didn't like the any of the characters I couldn't stop reading this book. It was like driving past that accident or knowing the train is going to wreck. You have to look. Cheryl, a wife who is finding herself alone more and more, and her stepson Teddy, recently kicked out of college, ride out a summer of hell in an exclusive beach community. The ending will be something I think about for awhile. Good stuff.

shawnmooney Sounds intriguing! 8y
Reggie @shawnmooney It won't be for everybody but give it a try. 8y
Notafraidofwords I loved this one ! 8y
Matilda I love the train wrecks with "unlikable" women! 8y

It's like she knew!!!!!! Lol, in the 00's, I was watching Fox news, there were all these analysts giving thoughts on the Arizona border militias. This one lady said she appreciates them because she knows people like herself who have 2nd homes in Arizona. This book is about a community just like that woman and people "like herself." I had this fear of growing old alone but this book makes me more afraid of having someone and still being alone.

Notafraidofwords I totally agree. I'd rather be alone than in bad company. 8y

🔔📚🔔 loved this one! And it's only .99 cents amazon/b&n

Notafraidofwords I loved this one. Didn't this remind you of The Awakening? 8y
Matilda @Notafraidofwords by Chopin? I haven't read it but feel like now I have to! 8y
Notafraidofwords @Matilda ooops sorry. & yes by her. The Awakening is one of my favorite classics and this book feels like a modern retelling. 8y
Matilda @Notafraidofwords that sounds awesome! 8y

The audio version is fantastic even though the story was just so so. The focus of this story is on identity, fitting in and family. The story reads like a dark satire about life among the rich, bored inhabitants of one snobby coastal community.

bermudaonion I think I might like this. 9y

Happened upon this book in a free pile at the office and so glad I did. I read it in one sitting and can't wait to discover more of Waclawiak's work. Any suggestions?
