Exceptional Lives
Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools | Ann P. Turnbull, H. Rutherford Turnbull, Michael L. Wehmeyer, Karrie A. Shogren
5 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Through real-life stories about children, their families, and their teachers, and through the use of the most recent evidence-based research on special education, this important book provides a comprehensive introduction to special education and its relationship to general education. The seventh edition provides this experience within the framework of three guiding themes: Inclusion, Partnerships, and Universal Design for Progress. Long noted for its focus on progress in general education through inclusion, families, and parent-professional partnerships, the new seventh edition of Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today's Schools, now includes a Universal Design for Progress feature in every chapter which highlights a technology that can be used to meet the needs of students with disabilities. This text stands out from the crowd with its strong belief in the capacity of special educators, general educators, related service professionals, and families to collaborate with one another for inclusion, and that inclusion is not only possible but desirable.

Pickpick

Well, this is a textbook so if I didn't have to read it for school I wouldn't have. Nevertheless I am glad I read it. It was for my Students with Special Needs course. You might want to pick it up if you work with someone or have a family member with special needs so that you may understand what's going on and what rights they have.

Goodnight Littens, I hope to be able to joining in more bookish conversations and in reading more this week. It's been tough to read and to connect with you all since I was working on 2 eight-page essays for school. Now that those are done I may be able to actually read 😊🙌🏽📖. But for now, goodnight. 🌙💤😴

So I broke down and bought an Amazon Fire 7 Tablet (or something like that). I needed a device to read my e-textbooks, since my husband used the iPad. Maybe this will encourage me to read ebooks, since I'm not big on ebooks. I got this wonderful case for it too. Oh and Motor Girl is an amazing comic book. She's a veteran with PTSD, has a friend who's a 🦍 (or not?), and she meets aliens (maybe?). 🤷🏽‍♀️

moranadatter I love that comic! It's like someone put Mercy Thompson, Jenny Lawson and Saturday morning cartoons in a blender and got magic. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 That cover is gorgeous! I'm hoping to start Motor Girl tomorrow. Yay - my copy is from @kmdartist. :-) 8y
TheBookAddict @kmdartist yes! It's definitely a good one. I've ordered no. 2 and 3 already. 8y
TheBookAddict @BarbaraTheBibliophage I hope you you enjoy it! It's really good. 8y

Reading this for school. It's my textbook for my Special Needs course (I'm going to school for Human Development and Family Studies). I didn't know that this is what "handicapped" meant. Shocked that it was used and glad that that word isn't acceptable anymore.

Jenshootsweddings I'd read more of that 8y
Bookish.Heart Wow, I didn't know that either! 8y
Louise Interesting that "disability" is accepted. I hear "differently abled" in some circles. 8y

Louise In fact, in Camphill Communities, the lingo is something like "souls in need of special care". 8y
TheBookAddict @Jenshootsweddings yeah me too. I'm thinking that I will be looking for more books on the subject. Maybe some biographies as well. 8y
TheBookAddict @Bookish.Heart yeah, it's surprising. I learned quite I bit from this first week in the course. It's all quite interesting. 8y
TheBookAddict @Louise it is interesting that it's acceptable, but I think it's a step in the right direction. It is definitely way better than handicapped. 8y
