John Donne Holy Sonnets
John Donne Holy Sonnets: with an introduction by John Daniel Thieme | John Donne, John Daniel Thieme
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
The nineteen poems that comprise John Donne's Holy Sonnets are works of anxiety and spiritual crisis. Most of the sonnets are thought to have been written between 1609 and 1611 but were not published until two decades latertwo years after Donne's death. The Holy Sonnets explore the poet's fear and trembling when faced with the realisation of his mortality and self-described unworthiness as a recipient of God's grace and mercy. Donne's poems navigate through his doubts in search of a divine comfort and assurance in the hope of salvation and eternal life. With an introduction by poet John Daniel Thieme.

When it comes to concise evocations of doubt and faith, no one has done it better than Donne. (Sorry!) #tree #poetrymatters @TheSpineView @LazyDays

That awkward moment when you're sorting through your books and noticed that you've had two copies of Donne's major works for years now.

Pickpick

Donne's thought-provoking "Holy Sonnets" are some of my favorite poetry. They can be confusing to read at times; but when the meaning of a sonnet suddenly "clicks," its brilliance and beauty become wonderfully apparent.
