The One-Eyed Man
The One-Eyed Man | Ron Currie
14 posts | 12 read | 18 to read
From the startlingly talented (New York Times) author of Everything Matters!the compelling story of a man who takes everything far too literally, and his adventures as the star of a reality TV show "Nobody writing today walks the knife edge of cynicism and sentiment more bravely, intelligently and confidently than Ron Currie. By turns hilarious and heartfelt, The One-Eyed Man is a revelation, a wonder." --Richard Russo Ron Curries three previous works of fiction have dazzled readers and critics alike with their originality, audacity, and psychological insight. A writer of unique vision and huge imagination, Currie excels at creating complex, troubled, yet endearing characters, and his work has won comparison to everyone from Kurt Vonnegut to George Saunders. K., the intriguing narrator of Curries new novel, joins the ranks of other great American literary creations who show us something new about ourselves. Like Jack Gladney from White Noise, K. is possessed of a hyper-articulate exasperation with the world, and like Ignatius J. Reilly in A Confederacy of Dunces, he is a doomed truth teller whom everyone misunderstands. After his wife Sarah dies, K. loses his metaphorical capacity, becoming so wedded to the notion of clarity that he infuriates everyone, friends and strangers alike. When he intervenes in an armed robbery, K. finds himself both an inadvertent hero and the star of a new reality television program. Together with Claire, a grocery store clerk with a sharp tongue and a yen for celebrity, he travels the country, ruffling feathers and gaining fame at the intersection of American politics and entertainment. But soon, through a conflagration of biblical proportions, he discovers that the world will fight viciously to preserve its delusions about itself. K.s quixotic effort to fully understand the world he lives in makes for a singular and engaging novel, one which further establishes Ron Curries position as one of todays rising stars in fiction. From the Hardcover edition.

Fun book. First half was great. Loved the back story with the main character and his wife ... the love and drama and him finding her cancer ... heart wrenching. Once it moved into the reality tv space I started to feel disconnected from the plot and characters. Still love Ron's writing style.

I'm really enjoying this book, that I just happened to pick up at the library because I was intrigued by the cover. My chocolate raspberry coffee is a delicious accompaniment on this dreary, rainy Saturday morning. ☕ #coffeeandabook

Zelma I never regret reading Ron Currie. His books aren‘t necessarily perfect but always worthwhile. 6y
Reggie Oh man, this book has the sweetest chapter use of a Clearly Canadian beverage, but then the back half gets dark crazy. Good luck!! 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Reggie I loved the Clearly Canadian chapter! Who doesn't miss that stuff?! I gave up a few chapters after that, though. This just wasn't the book to finish my 2018 reading with. 6y

Centique I find US gun culture so strange from what I‘ve read and seen. In NZ police don‘t even carry guns! (They have to call in a special armed squad) And yet we have a large hunting community, most farmers have guns etc. I guess that‘s the advantage of a long history of controlling it. So hard where you haven‘t had that ☹️ 7y
Reggie @Centique about 10 years ago I saw E True Hollywood‘s 10 worst gun massacres. In The 80‘s some guy in the UK who was mentally unstable got a gun and took out a whole kindergarten class. The same year their parliament decided to do away with guns so no one would have to got through that. In Texas a woman was eating with her parents in a restaurant when a guy drove his truck through the window, stepped out and started shooting. She lost her dad (edited) 7y
Reggie That day, then went onto becoming a state representative where she made it easier to carry a gun. She said if they had just been carrying a gun. I just couldn‘t fathom the thought process. Our country has entitlement issues and the NRA loves money and I think that‘s putting it lightly. So I get that people from other countries look at the every other week shooting and it seems strange that it‘s so weird cause it seems so preventable. (edited) 7y

Centique That‘s incredibly sad. 😰That point of view about carrying a gun seems so engrained. I watched a doco about it once and it was like a religious fervour these people had for gun carrying. I‘ve often wondered how that arose as a social phenomenon in one country but not in another. Would be fascinating to read how that happened! 7y
Reggie @Centique the guy talking in this quote later goes on to say that a gun is like the adult version of a comfort object, say for instance like a Linus blanket or a doll. And then he goes on to piss off the NRA guy he‘s talking with on a talk show by saying that people who need comfort objects never fully separated themselves from the mother. The host asks him if he is saying that the NRA constituents are basically mama‘s boys and K.the MC says yes. 7y
Reggie It‘s hilarious and a little true. 7y
Centique Brilliant! Did you see John Oliver on The Daily Show discuss the Australian situation with someone from the NRA? That was gold. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mVuspKSjfgA 7y
Reggie @Centique Lololol that was so hilarious. 7y

Mehso-so

After the death of his wife, fortysomething K. finds he can only view things literally. This has various results: he gets beat-up, saves a life, becomes a media celebrity, and lands a reality show called "America, You Stupid."
Armed with fact, K exposes retail giants, gun nuts, racists, GMO-haters, the left, the right, the average. It's a very NOW book. And like most satire, it's great at pointing out absurdities but short on solutions or hope.

merelybookish Maybe would have been better as a short story. #tob18 #toblonglist 7y

Started this today. I expect the man-takes-everything-literally premise will grow tiresome BUT his interactions at Total Foods and then Big Buy (thinly-veiled versions of Whole Foods and Best Buy) were pretty funny.

Oh Sarah, your husband, K., will #missyou so much he reads everything there is to read at the library. His form of autism will make him stay at a broken do not walk sign for 4 hours where he eventually gets caught on tape stopping a robbery across the street. This will lead to a reality show where he is a counterpoint to every topic. He will meet a new woman and what started as funny will take a dark turn after he confronts the NRA. #rocktober

There is no way I could do this book justice with a review. But what I will do is give a shoutout to Edana from Octavia Butler's Kindred who every time she came back from the past went to the library to better prepare herself for the next time. To all the people of Litsy who read books to educate themselves, and give themselves a better understanding of things they may not agree with, this book said to me, we need more of you now more than ever.

This book is blowing my mind. Some philosophy, some anger, a lot of truth, one of the sweetest uses of Clearly Canadian (orchard peach flavor) in a chapter, and I'm only half way through.

Victoria_C Love that if only for the Clearly Canadian reference! Just finished my kickstarter CC cases recently. 8y

The only reason I bought an #ereader a few years ago was because of NetGalley and Edelweiss. I still only use my Nook to read freebies and the occasional library book -- I just like holding books more and if I'm going to spend money, it's important to me that I do it at local bookstores. Here's a little peek at my galleys. I can be a little lazy at getting through them in a timely manner. #SeasonsReadings2016
