The Relative Came written by Cynthia Rylant and illustrated by Stephen Gammell, 1985. Caldecott Honor Book. A wonderful story about a big Appalachian family that comes together in the summer and their love and fondness for each other. It‘s a delightful story with equally delightful imagery and illustration.
The illustrations give a wonderful feeling of warmth and family. The use of colored pencil gives a soft and happy mood to the story. The characters, setting, and plot are all very distinct to Appalachia and the people that live there and I imagine that it‘s a very relatable story for children that love in those areas or even just have big families.
