It is 1921 and a terrible discovery has been made at a manor house in Surrey - the bloodied bodies of Colonel Fletcher, his wife and two of their staff. The victims have all been stabbed and the lack of disturbance in the house suggests that the attack was one of terrifying speed. The Surrey police force seem ready to put the murders town to robbery with violence, but Detective Inspector Madden from Scotland Yard sees things slightly differently. For he has experienced the horrors of World War I and has seen madness at first hand. And he is certain this crime has been perpetrated by a psychopath who will strike again . . . and soon.

A historical mystery (Post WWI), with an England still coming to grips with the dynamics of life after a bloody and brutal war. Read like a modern day mystery in a 1920‘s language. John Madden, scared inside and outside is tasked with finding a brutal serial killer and starts implementing theories of investigation that I‘m not sure if they‘d be historically accurate, but it doesn‘t distract from a story that keeps the pages turning. 4 ⭐️

This is a really good detective story/police procedural set in post WW1 England. We‘re following Inspector John Madden of Scotland Yard - who as you expect in this genre, is a troubled man - but he‘s haunted by memories of war rather than cynicism or a failed marriage. The murders of a family has Madden suspecting something more than the presumptions his superiors jump towards.⬇️

Centique ...The reader discovers the culprit fairly early and then the tension mounts as the hunt is on. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Good psychological twist. Nothing ground breaking but solid, likeable, detailed and the women characters are few but thoughtfully drawn (edited) 4y
Centique And here‘s a river that I‘m currently holidaying beside. First time out of the North Island this year. We were supposed to be in Fiji 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I‘m thrilled I get to visit somewhere, anywhere! 4y

Absolutely loved this book! A fantastic mystery set in England just after WWI ends. Delightful cast of characters with great character development occurring throughout the book. It was hard to put down and the story was so well paced and so well thought out. I highly recommend this book and am going to have to procure the other books in the series as soon as I can!
