Bette And Joan: The Divine Feud
Bette And Joan: The Divine Feud | Shaun Considine
14 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford: two of the deadliest arch-rivals of all time. Born in the same year (though Davis swore 'Crawford is five years older than me if she's a day'), the two fought bitterly throughout their long and brilliant Hollywood careers. Joan became a star first, which always irked her rival, who suggested her success had come via the casting couch. 'It sure as hell beats the hard cold floor' was Crawford's scathing response. According to Davis, Crawford was not only a nymphomaniac but also 'vain, jealous and about as stable and trustworthy as a basket of snakes'. Crawford, in turn, accused Davis of stealing her glory and planning to destroy her. The two rivals fought over as many men as they did parts - when Bette fell in love with her co-star in DANGEROUS, Franchot Tone, Joan stepped in and married him. The women worked together only once, in the classic thriller WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, in which their violent hatred of each other as rival sisters was no act.

A very entertaining audiobook for #TitlesAndTunes #DramaQueen (s). I had fun with the stories of old Hollywood while I walked my laps around the soccer field this week.

Cinfhen I picked this one up too! Glad to hear it‘s enjoyable 😁❣️ 1y

I‘ve been meaning to re-read this one forever, and next month‘s prompt for #TitlesandTunes is the perfect excuse. I pared Taylor Swift‘s The Last Great American Dynasty with it because of the Drama Queen vibe.

5feet.of.fury I‘ve had that book in paperback foreverrrrr & have never started it 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh, fun book choice!!! 1y
peanutnine Great song choice! 1y
BarbaraBB Glad to have another Taylor Swift on the September list! We‘re making up for earlier months @Cinfhen and @jenniferw88 💕 1y

Loved it. And there‘s a movie?? Has anyone seen it?

EvieBee Yes! It‘s amazing. Wasn‘t the show fab?! So well done. AND the movie is based on a book. Also good. It comes full circle. 🤓 3y
tricours @EvieBee there‘s a show as well? 3y
EvieBee @tricours there‘s the book that started it all: whatever happened to baby jane. The movie they filmed based on the book. The book you just read about the feud while filming Baby Jane. And finally an FX show about the Feud book. That‘s a rabbit hole that I happily myself in for months! The picture you posted is from the FX miniseries called Feud. So good! https://youtu.be/nZpANeIWWXI (edited) 3y
tricours @EvieBee thanks! I will have to check it out! 3y

This is fascinating stuff! I had no idea they were so raunchy in the 30‘s and 40‘s 😅

Mehso-so

I was pretty over this by the end. The feud was tiresome and repetitive. And the extreme detail, such as naming attendees at parties, award shows and events, while interesting in the beginning left me saying “who cares” by the middle especially since the list seldom varied.

RadicalReader @BethwithBooks love your username so cute and creative!! 6y

Listening to this on audio - less than halfway through and already the feud has become tedious and repetitive but I am finding the descriptions and details of old Hollywood fascinating

This book was interesting and entertaining for long afternoons spent doing laundry. It‘s full of the kinds of gossip and snark that you would expect. Bette moved a former husband‘s body to make room for her dog. Joan was in bed with the flu and a bottle of vodka. This was my first listen for the #armchairaudies. It most likely won‘t be my pick- I tend to go for the serious ones. However this was highly entertaining and I recommend it.

Reading this for the Armchair Audies. Not sure it will be a winner, but it sure is entertaining.

Both! As long as there are no missing pages I don't care about the condition.
Both
Tea is my preference, but I don't mind hot chocolate
If it is a strong scent then neither; if they're light scents then both.
I prefer dark colours.
Warm blankets.
I like those little Funko Pops.

BibliophileMomma I can‘t stand strong scents either. I really can only handle foodie scents. lol 7y
WarpedSweetness @Tiffy_Reads Sometimes I cannot handle foodie scents either. It really depends on how strong the scent is. I have a chronic migraine thing, and strong smells seem to trigger a migraine. 7y

A #bookspiral from my #libraryhaul. It looked nicer, but my son poked at it while I was taking the picture and I was too lazy to fix it.

Is anyone else watching Fued: Bette & Joan on FX? It is phenomenal! I am equally obsessed with these leading ladies and everything about this show is satisfying my need for information.

Can anyone recommend some additional reading to go along with this?! In desperate need of a fix. 😬😆

ruthemmielang Ooh! I need to watch this 8y
