I had to look up this YouTube video recommended by @SamAnne and I just about died laughing. Here‘s the link, but viewer beware. Content may not be appropriate for all audiences, as evidenced by the fact that SNL felt it had to do this interview because a parent thought showing a picture of David when learning about Renaissance art was pornographic. That parent better never take the family to Italy!

Graywacke That‘s awesome. Thanks 1y

GingerAntics There sure are A LOT of baked statues EVERYWHERE!!! I get the feeling that this parent isn‘t big on leave the United States (or the Bible Belt for that matter). 1y
Slajaunie @GingerAntics Florida is not the Bible Belt but that was hilarious! 😆😆😆 1y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie don‘t tell Florida‘s Christians, the Pew Research Institute, Yale, Business Insider, or the rest of the Bible Belt that. They disagree with you. Admittedly, since Catholicism is generally vilified in Bible Belt, very few people include Southern Florida part of the Bible Belt, but northern Florida absolutely is included, and many in southern Florida consider themselves as part of the Bible Belt. 1y
Slajaunie @GingerAntics Good to know. I would think southern Florida had a large Catholic population. Panhandle I can see. 1y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie it‘s like the panhandle and about the top third is what is usually shown in maps that include Florida. It seems a rather fluid concept. I was shocked to find some maps entirely exclude Texas and even Louisiana. 🤯 1y
Slajaunie @GingerAntics Southern Louisiana is definitely Catholic. Texas probably has quite a few with the immigration. 1y
GingerAntics @Slajaunie they‘ve got catholics, but they are far outnumbered by evangelicals. If you ask most Texans, they consider themselves the Bible Belt… and they have one of the cities that competes for the title of belt buckle of the Bible Belt. 1y

This happened today. Very exciting to have seen the Sistine Chapel and now David especially after reading the tagged book. If ever there were a time to read lots about the places you‘re visiting this was it. I understood so much more about what our tour guide was describing

By the way, daughter and I both agreed that David is quite good looking

lynneamch It's been 54 years since I saw him. He's held up very nicely! 1y
Tamra @lynneamch 😂😂 The ageless David 1y
SamAnne I highly recommend YouTubing the SNL skit where David visits Weekend Update. 1y
Texreader @lynneamch @Tamra I‘m just saying he‘s a gorgeous dude 1y

Michelangelo was a grumpy and admittedly ugly man who was so talented it‘s almost unreal. A sculptor, he reluctantly accepted the commission to paint the Sistine Chapel with almost no knowledge of how to paint alfresco, much less of painting the correct dimensions of humans or anything else on curved surfaces that would look normal while standing 60 feet below. And yet he did, creating a monumental work of art I simply cannot wait ⬇️

Texreader to see (scheduled for June 9)! This book was an intimate look at Michelangelo, his relationships with Pope Julius II, his family, his assistants, and with the famed artists at the time: Rafael and DaVinci. We hear his words in his poems and letters to his father and brothers, who probably did indeed take advantage of Michelangelo‘s hard-earned money. I‘m so glad I read this in advance of my trip. 2y
lynneamch I'm sure you will appreciate it even more having read this book. Many, many years ago, my English teacher took a group of us to Italy and made us all read this one first 2y
Texreader @lynneamch What a great idea! I‘m going to stack it! 2y

Such a great struggle overcome by Michaelangelo to create a long lasting work of art. I appreciated all the details that weighed in and influenced the artist for either good or bad. The author provides a lot of useful info that helps understand the magnificence that it took to build this.

Well isn't this a pleasant surprise! Above is an image of The Battle of Cascina by Michelangelo and the bottom is a sketch of Leonardo da Vinci's The Battle of Anghiari from Ross King's history book entitled Michelangelo and the Pope's ceiling. #page24ofcurrentread #readjanuary

Just found out about #ReadJanuary and tried to find a book of my own that fit the January 18th #Royals theme. Well here it is. How does it fit the theme you ask? Well in 1508 the papal states were ruled by an Absolute Monarch who happened to be the pope. Also, the author's last name is King! What does everyone think? Does it fit?

Branwen Sounds perfect to me! :-) 8y
ValerieAndBooks Sure! And I really like Ross King's books. This one was good ! 8y
Pruzy @ValerieAndBooks He's also really great in person! I went to one of his talks once, it was as interesting as one of his books! 8y

I love art books. I'm not gonna lie- I was too lazy to take them off the shelf (they're way at the top and heavy!) so I just took a pic of the shelf mostly as-is (I tossed in a few that were on another shelf) but there you have it. #artrelatedbooks (Non-fiction). Pay no mind to photo-bombing Finger Puppet Jane Austen at the bottom. She is such an attention whore. #seasonsreadins2016
