Hard Work
Hard Work: Life in Low-pay Britain | Polly Toynbee
3 posts
'A passionately reasoned and compelling account of the avoidable cruelties still embedded in the underside of British life - by a writer who has literally worn the clothes, lived in the flats and done the jobs of the poor. Every member of the cabinet should be required to read it, apologise and then act' Will Hutton A frank and breathtaking book, this is journalist and broadcaster Polly Toynbee's account of her courageous intention to live and work on the minimum wage. The 'decent living' wage set by the Council of Europe is set at 7.39. The minimum wage in Britain is currently 4.10 per hour. And often, people are working for less, their voices unheard, their faces unnoticed. The low-paid are caught in an economic double bind that victimises them and shames the rest of us. Toynbee took whatever jobs she could find, often offered for less than the official minimum wage. Living on an estate in Clapham, she started from scratch and found that if she were truly unemployed, she would not even be able to afford a new job, and that faced with starvation, it's impossible not to sink into debt. In this powerful and compelling book, Polly Toynbee journeys to the inside of Britain today and uncovers that world which is invisible to most. This is a damning portrait of social justice in Britain.

Omg, that took a lot of doing! Am very proud of myself to have received my 200 reviews badge on NetGalley.

My rating, however, has fallen from an already pitiful 30% to 21% so I've still got a lot of work to do !

Alfoster Woohoo!👏 3y
TheSpineView Awesome! 🥳🥳🥳 3y

shanaqui By rating, you mean the proportion of reviews you've written compared to the number of review copies you've had, right? Yeah, mine needs work too. Dx 3y
readingjedi @shanaqui Yes, that right. It doesn't help that I can't stop myself from requesting more, More, MORE! But my reasoning is - what self-respecting book lover wouldn't?! 3y
shanaqui @readingjedi I keep including an ARC or two in my #BookSpin lists... But not enough to help me keep up. 😅 Good luck to us both with catching up?! 3y

Here's another book I've had my eye on for a #brexitbooklist I think understanding some of the sort of work people have ended up in whilst being told the country is more prosperous is a good place to start. None of these jobs are easy yet very they are badly paid. Another one I haven't read yet but I have a lot of strong feelings on care work in particular especially after the care ministers comment recently

quirkyreader There is a similar book that came out in the States called Nickeled and Dimed. I would like to see how the stories of the workers in both book share the same struggles and obsticals. 8y
Weaponxgirl @quirkyreader I actually own both books with that exact thing in mind. A big difference I can think of would be we have a minimum wage that includes waiters ect. To me a tip should be about thanking great service not topping up someone's wages so they can afford to live. Although I think there's plenty of low wage jobs where people dont get tips so in all honesty I feel weird giving them 8y
