Schoch unwittingly embarks on a life changing adventure as he tries to save a tiny pink elephant from life as a lab subject and circus performer. I liked how the various strands slowly tie together and the writing seems well researched but was perhaps a little dry for it. Not as humorous or sentimental as I expected and the moral issues raised only superficially. Nonetheless a refreshing alternative to typical crime thrillers (+ elephants!) 6/10

Ich versteh dich also gut. 5y

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this! A story of friendship and ethics. Oh, and a small pink elephant.

Tanisha_A Anything to do with elephants I have to stack! 😆 6y
Clare_Riley @Tanisha_A it‘s certainly a different kind of elephant to read about!🤣 6y

Also just put this one on hold. I hadn‘t heard of it before I started browsing Libby this morning. But it promises a story about “friendship, second chances, and a tiny glow-in-the-dark elephant”. And somehow that was an automatic “put on hold” for me. Also I‘m trying to read more translated fiction.
Have you read this or other books by Martin Suter?

Cinfhen I can see how a glow in the dark pink elephant could sway you 😜 6y

Everything felt a little too simplistic for me. From the moralising to the writing and characterization nothing went very deep and the short chapters and converging timelines felt very unbalanced. I did learn some interesting things about elephants though!

Aimeesue And a very pretty elephant! 6y
Heideschrampf Martin Sutter is pretty famous in german literary circles, but i never warmed up to him either... 6y
Moray_Reads @Heideschrampf I haven't read anything else by him but I always wonder if it's something lost in translation... 6y

A sweet (but not cutesy) story of a homeless man who finds a tiny glowing pink elephant. The story flips between Schoh caring for the elephant, how he came into being, & the 'evil scientists' hunting to get him back.

I'm quite divided - the book's trying to be so many things! It raises questions of ethics, animal rights & genetic modification alongside a warm story of people-that-care. The ending won me over tho, so a pick for that reason.

Cathythoughts Great review 👍🏻 6y

My current read for #NetGalleyTBRAttack.

A homeless man, Schoh, wakes up to find he's sharing his sleeping quarters with a tiny glow-in-the-dark pink elephant. The story switches between Schoh's efforts to care for the elephant and how it came into existence in the first place. I'm not too sure how I feel about this yet - Schoh's story seems much more engaging than the backstory so far.

This is a fast & easy read with accessible and immediate language that belies a tale that, despite its quirkiness, delivers poignancy, food for thought & an undeniable delight in the titular character. Yes, Sabu Barisha IS a pink miniature elephant. And yes, WTF?! Did I mention she glows in the dark? But it's a book about emotional journeys and redemption as well (and one of the most satisfying come-uppances in recent literature!) On one level 👇

readingjedi ... a fantastical tale with a happy ending, on another a modern day fable about ethics, morality, social responsibility, sanctity of life, animal rights - there's lots to unpack! But you actually don't have to to be charmed by this novel. 🐘🐘🐘 7y

1. Quality family time.
2. 5 foot 6 and a half (the half is vitally important)
3. For nearly 20 years this Yellowbelly has lived in Yorkshire. Every day is a test of endurance 😉
4. Elefant - it's a quirky affair and no mistake.
5. My face certainly is awesome but I don't do selfies (cos I always seem to turn into a gruesome troll 🤔)

Dolly Is it the weather that tests your endurance? I‘m curious.🤓 7y
readingjedi @Dolly It was a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that the natives of the county of Lincolnshire (i.e. me) have a rivalry/love to hate relationship with the natives of Yorkshire (where I live). It stems from Yorkshire folk thinking their county is superior to every other in every way while us Yellowbellies KNOW Lincolnshire is the best! 😉😁😉😁 7y

How does genetic engineering, the circus and the homeless scene in Zurich come together in a story? The way Martin Suter has done it in this book. What a crazy, emotional ride this was!
