Hockey Night in Canada: 60 Seasons
Hockey Night in Canada: 60 Seasons | Michael McKinley
5 posts | 1 read
Before Twitter, before 24-hour sports channels, long before fans watched highlight goals on their phones long before something called a highlight had been invented there was "Hockey Night in Canada." It was cutting-edge technology back then. Anywhere in Canada, a hockey fan could come in from the snow, sit down by the radio, listen to a game played in Montreal or Toronto, and experience the thrill of a game played hundreds, or thousands, of kilometres away. Before all of what we call Canada had joined Confederation, even before the Original Six, there was "Hockey Night in Canada" to define both the country and the game. Then, sixty years ago, another technological marvel changed the game and the country and launched the longest-running program in the world. CBC s "Hockey Night in Canada," for the first time, was on television. At first fans worried that television would ruin the game. Now Canadians can hardly imagine the game without the CBC broadcast. "Hockey Night in Canada: 60 Seasons" celebrates the moments, the personalities, and the innovations that have shaped our experience of the game. What would hockey be without instant replay or the three stars ? What would it be without Foster Hewitt, Howie Meeker, Peter Puck, or mythical moments like Bobby Orr s Stanley Cup winning goal? What would the game be without the Saturday night double-header, or Coach s Corner, or Bob Cole s Stand up and cheer, Canada! at the 2002 Olympics? "Hockey Night in Canada: 60 Seasons" celebrates not only what is great about the game, but how "Hockey Night in Canada" has come to define it. Written by Michael McKinley, author of "Hockey: A People s History," with a foreword by Ron MacLean and richly illustrated with rare on-screen and archival material, "Hockey Night in Canada: 60 Seasons" features behind-the-scenes glimpses into the way the broadcast was born and developed and little-known stories about the men and women who have brought our game to life in sixty fascinating moments."

2. March, 2016
3. Not a dish, but the Caesar cocktail was invented in Calgary. If you‘ve never heard of it, you don‘t know what you‘re missing.
4. 6:00 am
5. Books, gaming handhelds, all the chargers ever.

Saturday is hockey night in Canada. The kids are in Ottawa and Matthews returns to scene of the crime... his debut historic 4 goals. #readingandwatchinghockey

writerlibrarian Kadri put the puck in the net on a PP. In Detroit, Letang scored but got hurt ... 8y
writerlibrarian Bozak with an assist from Marner less than 2 minutes into the second period. In Detroit, Geno scored. It's 2-0 for the Kids and 2-0 for the Pens. Yes, I'm kinda listening and watching 2 different games. I'm multi-tasking. 8y
writerlibrarian Detroit tied the game with back to back goals and dismal PP from the Pens. Ottawa is on the board it's 2-1 Leafs. As the 2nd period is ending Ottawa ties the game. Same in Detroit, things stand at 3-3. (edited) 8y
writerlibrarian Third period is ups and downs. Goal refused in Detroit and Kadri put another one in the net in Ottawa. Disaster in Detroit Pens are losing 6-3 but Brown added to the kids' lead with a Matthews' assist. (edited) 8y
writerlibrarian The Kids win two back to back but more important they kept their lead. Pens had a meltdown. Me, I'm at 50% of SPQR. Caesar died. (edited) 8y
