My Life to Live
My Life to Live: How I Became the Queen of Soaps When Men Ruled the Airwaves | Agnes Nixon
4 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
From the Emmy-winning writer and creator of All My Children, One Life to Live, and Loving, a memoir of her trailblazing rise to the top of the television industry, including behind-the-scenes stories from some of the most beloved soaps of all time Before there was Erica Kane, Adam Chandler, or Victoria Lord, there was Agnes Nixon, a young girl who dreamed up stories for paper dolls. Those tales she imagined--ones filled with ambitions, rivalries, and romances--would soon echo her own path to success. In a memoir filled with as much drama as the soaps she penned, Nixon shares her journey as daughter of a broken marriage, who fought back against her father's wish that she take over the family burial garments business, overcame the heartbreak of losing her fianc? in WWII, and later became one of the most successful names in the TV industry. Fans of Nixon's greatest creations, All My Children and One Life to Live, will delight at Nixon's own incredible life, as well as the behind-the-scenes insight she lends to daytime's most popular programs. Nixon will share the inspiration behind and casting of the iconic character Erica Kane, played by Susan Lucci; the story bible for All My Children, and how it became lost, and then locked away in a drawer for many years; and how Nixon positioned ABC to become the media giant it is today, despite pushback from her male counterparts. This candid glimpse behind the curtain of the soap opera industry will charm soap fans and story lovers alike.

Mehso-so

A nice surface read if you're looking for some ABC Daytime Nostalgia. Nixon never really gets into the meat of how she ruled the airwaves. OLTL always felt like the bastard child of ABC, and that's definitely the case here. The primary daytime focus is all AMC. Nixon gives more of her personal story growing up than she does her days in daytime.

Pickpick

I took a day to think about how I wanted to rate this one, because it's better than a 3 but I'm not sure it's a 4. I was a fan of AMC and OLTL and I thought Nixon's life story was interesting. She cares about the characters she created in Llanview and Pine Valley, But very little is said about OLTL.

Sadly, she died last year, but the afterword says she completed her manuscript 2 days earlier. I wonder what we would have got with edits.

DivineDiana There is a coffee house/community center near my house called The New Leaf Club. It is run by her daughter. Agnes Nixon's TV characters were modeled after neighbors of my neighborhood. I did see her at a concert at the club last year. A gracious, charming lady. She was a ground breaker for women. RIP (edited) 8y

April is starting off wet, for sure! A rainy morning and my #TBR includes 3 library books I had no business checking out yesterday afternoon.

The struggle is real 😳
