H.h. Holmes
H.h. Holmes: How a Murderer Became a Devil | Adam Selzer
9 posts | 8 read | 71 to read
"H.H. Holmes: How a Murderer Became a Devil" is the first truly comprehensive book examining the life and career of a murderer who has become one of America s great super villains, revealing not only the true story, but how the legend evolved. Hundreds of primary sources that have never been examined before, including legal documents, letters, articles and records that have been buried in archives for over a century. Though Holmes has become just as famous now as he was in 1895, a deep analysis of contemporary materials make very clear how much of the story as we know it came from reporters who were nowhere near the action, a dangerously unqualified new police chief, and, not least, from lies invented by Holmes himself. Tons of stunning new data about Holmes, his background, his era, and the wild cast of characters who circulated in and about the famous castle building. There has never been a particularly accurate book on Holmes - those published to date have relied heavily on pulp re-tellings of his story from the 1940s. Exhaustively researched and painstakingly brought to life. "

Fascinating and complex true story of the White City Devil without the sensationalism that the media has always told.

A detailed account, overly so in places. I‘d never heard much about Holmes before watching a video on YouTube a few months ago. I find it frustrating that there‘s little confirmed truth about his crimes. A fascinating tale though.

Connster @TheBookStacker I wanted to read that one, rather than this as I‘ve heard it‘s excellent. However, I also wanted to listen on Audible and it wasn‘t available, so I settled for this one instead. What did you think of it? 4y
TheBookStacker I loved it. I also love truly everything he writes but that was my first of his books and it was awesome 4y
Connster @TheBookStacker I need to read it then! 4y

There is so much misinformation out there. Adam Selzer went to primary sources to write this book. Even many of those are not reliable, but Selzer does his best to sift through all the information and try to come up with the most plausible story of Holmes. It was good, and for enjoyment of/interest in the book, I‘d actually give it 3.5 stars (good), but I really want to give it an overall of 4 stars for all the detailed research. Cont in comments.

LibraryCin I feel like this should be the primary book on Holmes, with all the research that went into it. Selzer also looks at other books/articles written about Holmes and looks deeper into where the information came from for those works to determine how legitimate the information is (including Eric Larson‘s “The Devil in the White City”). Well worth the read for anyone interested in learning more about Holmes. 6y
Ruthiella I thought the Larson book was entertaining but he did an awful lot of assuming about Holmes. Good to know this book is available! 😀 6y
LibraryCin @Ruthiella Good catch on the larson book! I dont remember questioning the info! 6y

It wasnt a BAD book exactly. I think that after reading a lot of really decent HH Holmes books last year, a part of me expected it to live up to those and it didnt. Really the main part of Holmes life was over by page 150. I really wished for more on the Murder Castle and his crimes.

From Jack the Ripper to HH Holmes, I may be a serial killer junkie. This is the last of my library haul, then its on to my actual TBR, I suppose

Curled up inside while it's below freezing outside, determined to finish this book before the end of 2017! It's good, but long, and sometimes dense.

Godmotherx5 I LOVE THAT MUG!!! 7y
TheBookkeepersApprentice @Godmotherx5 thanks! It was a present from a friend 😊 7y

There isn't enough information to know what he really did or didn't do. Lots of speculation and circumstantial evidence. The media (newspapers) back in the 1890's made up stuff just like today. Pity because the author meticulously researched material on Holmes and revealed just about all that is known.

#TBRtemptation post 5! This is the story of America's first & most notorious serial killer & his 1893 Chicago World's Fair spree. It's the first truly comprehensive book looking at his life & killings. Combing meticulously through extensive archives, Selzer came to realize that much of the story was incorrect by distant reporters & unqualified police. This book was invaluable for the upcoming Scorsese/DiCaprio bio pic. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

IndyHannaJones So I live in Indy where he lived briefly and supposedly they found bones at his cottage this week! 8y
peaKnit Very interesting! 8y
ptkpepe98 I haven't read this, but did read "The Devil in the White City" years ago. Fascinating to learn how policing was then, and consider how it has evolved, and yet, it remains difficult to identify serial killers despite all of the technology we now possess. 8y
