A detailed account, overly so in places. I‘d never heard much about Holmes before watching a video on YouTube a few months ago. I find it frustrating that there‘s little confirmed truth about his crimes. A fascinating tale though.
There is so much misinformation out there. Adam Selzer went to primary sources to write this book. Even many of those are not reliable, but Selzer does his best to sift through all the information and try to come up with the most plausible story of Holmes. It was good, and for enjoyment of/interest in the book, I‘d actually give it 3.5 stars (good), but I really want to give it an overall of 4 stars for all the detailed research. Cont in comments.
It wasnt a BAD book exactly. I think that after reading a lot of really decent HH Holmes books last year, a part of me expected it to live up to those and it didnt. Really the main part of Holmes life was over by page 150. I really wished for more on the Murder Castle and his crimes.
From Jack the Ripper to HH Holmes, I may be a serial killer junkie. This is the last of my library haul, then its on to my actual TBR, I suppose
Curled up inside while it's below freezing outside, determined to finish this book before the end of 2017! It's good, but long, and sometimes dense.
There isn't enough information to know what he really did or didn't do. Lots of speculation and circumstantial evidence. The media (newspapers) back in the 1890's made up stuff just like today. Pity because the author meticulously researched material on Holmes and revealed just about all that is known.
#TBRtemptation post 5! This is the story of America's first & most notorious serial killer & his 1893 Chicago World's Fair spree. It's the first truly comprehensive book looking at his life & killings. Combing meticulously through extensive archives, Selzer came to realize that much of the story was incorrect by distant reporters & unqualified police. This book was invaluable for the upcoming Scorsese/DiCaprio bio pic. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
Me: Now would be a great time to catch up on work reading!
Brain: Or you could read a book about the White City serial killer.
Me: *grabs popcorn* Sold, to Amy G. Dala in the back!
