The Pendragon Legend
The Pendragon Legend | Antal Szerb
3 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
At an end-of-the London season soiree, the young Hungarian scholar-dilettante Janos Batky is introduced to the Earl of Gwynedd, a reclusive eccentric who is the subject of strange rumours. Invited to the family seat, Pendragon Castle in North Wales, Batky receives a mysterious phone-call warning him not to go... Antal Szerb's first novel The Pendragon Legend (1934), set in Wales is a gently satirical blend of gothic and romantic genres, crossed with the murder mystery format to produce a fast-moving and often hilarious romp. But beneath the surface, the reader becomes aware of a steely intelligence probing moral, psychological and religious questions.

This was bonkers and brilliant. Family fortunes, secret societies, even a gnome. Laugh out loud funny in places too. Glad I stumbled across it.

[3/100 for 2017]

ThatNeilGuy You've already finished three books in 2017?!? 8y
beckygracelea @ThatNeilGuy Well, I read all but 100 pages of the first one in 2016 so had a bit of a head start! And also on holiday, so got a fair bit of reading done (reasonably fast reads too). The pace will slow down hugely when I have to go back to work... (edited) 8y

Next read! Look at this description. Look at it. It's like I was meant to find it randomly stashed on a shelf next to Dracula in a bookshop.
