The Shutter of Snow
The Shutter of Snow | Emily Holmes Coleman
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
In a prose form as startling as its content, The Shutter of Snow portrays the post-partum psychosis of Marthe Gail, who after giving birth to her son, is committed to an insane asylum. Believing herself to be God, she maneuvers through an institutional world that is both sad and terrifying, echoing the worlds of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Snake Pit. Based upon the author's own experience after the birth of her son in 1924, The Shutter of Snow retains all the energy it had when first published in 1930.

Mrs Kemp had a badly used face. Her hair was pulled back from a red and uncomprehending forehead. Her mouth fell into her chin. She marched up and down the hall. Now she was no longer a symbol, she was a cello accompaniment to a dirge. She came like a tiger thieving and walked away from the theft. She came like a panther back and forth, raising a head at the end of the bars.

You can‘t see it in the photo but there‘s a light snow falling and it‘s really beautiful. I‘m waiting for some bread to rise before I prep loaves for baking and feeling pretty relaxed.

What I picked up for myself at the library book sale this morning. I only had about 20 minutes for a quick browse but I managed to get these and plenty of kids books (see the following post for more details) for about $14. I've already read A Little Life and Re Jane and decided they looked like they needed a new home.

I'm reading Coleman's novel on this snowy afternoon. Coleman's own stay at a mental institution after giving birth to her son in 1924 inspired the story.
