End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light
End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light | Paul Bogard
11 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
The "terrific ... moving, poetic, immersive, multifaceted, and thought-provoking" book (Publishers Weekly) that will open your eyes to the night. A brilliantly starry night is one of nature's most thrilling wonders. Yet in our world of nights as bright as day, most of us no longer experience true darkness. Eight out of ten Americans born today won't ever live where they can see the Milky Way. And exposure to artificial light at night has been cited as a factor in health concerns ranging from poor sleep to cancer. In his gorgeous debut, THE END OF NIGHT, Paul Bogard travels the globe to find the night, blending personal narrative, natural history, health, science, and folklore to shed light on darkness. Showing exactly what we've lost, what we have left, and what we might hope to regain, he attempts nothing less than a restoration of how we see the spectacularly primal, wildly dark night sky.

Pickpick

I found this very interesting. He not only discussed the light or darkness of each place, and the resulting lack of stars that can be seen, he also talked about crime (some light helps, but more and more light doesn‘t make a difference), and also the effect of perpetual light at night on humans‘ health, not just due to sleepyness for those who work at night, but also cancer. There was discussion of other animals, who rely on night and darkness.

Pickpick

Light pollution isn't just something that annoys astronomers. Artificial light is directly linked to certain types of hormonal cancers like breast and prostate cancer, and has terrible effects on our ecosystem and the planet due to the various types of damage that it causes to nocturnal animals. Paul Bogard explores these issues masterfully in this important book.
