Nine Days to Christmas: A Story from Mexico is an (RF) book by Marie Hall Est and Aurora Labastida. In addition, Nine Days to Christmas is a Caldecott award winner. This story is about a girl named Ceci who is excited about Christmas and La Posada. La posada is a tradition in Mexico where they spend nine days in a series of celebrations. Furthermore, this book is great for shared reading (SR) because of its length and opportunity for discussions.
A good introduction to learning about other cultures.
This Caldecott winner is not your typical Christmas story. This art in this story very much focuses on color and drawing your attention on certain pieces. The background of the story is in black and white but the important features of each page are brought to light by color.
“Each night for nine nights before Christmas there would be a posadas, and each night at a different house”. This is key information to know about the story. The teacher or parent would have to read this part slow so the children really pick up on this one.
Blurb: This story is very long which could be an issue in telling a classroom. The illustrations are a bit dull, but this story is very interesting for me. This would be better for an older elementary crowd.
Award: Caldecott
Review: This book is about a little girl who gets to experience the traditional Mexican customs, posada, for the first time. This party last nine days before Christmas. This book explores the entire process of a posada including Ceci, the main character, trying all of the delicious foods and picking out a special piñata. This is a unique take to a Christmas story and a great read for anyone.
Congrats on your milestone (nice catch, btw) and thanks for the opportunity! #9daysoflitmas @Schnoebs
For some reason I woke up thinking about this children's Christmas book today, even though Christmas is only 4 days away now. I used to love it when I was little. Anyone else remember this one?
