Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction
Bagombo Snuff Box: Uncollected Short Fiction | Kurt Jr. Vonnegut
7 posts | 12 read | 13 to read
Before the Golden Age of magazines drew to a close half a century ago -- soon to be beaten at the entertainment game by the new little boxes with moving images that were finding their way into the homes of more and more Americans -- a young PR man at General Electric sold his first short story to one of the doomed publications. By the time he'd sold his third, he decided to quit GE and join the likes of Hemingway and Fitzgerald and Faulkner. and try to make a living at fifteen hundred dollars a pop. With four major magazines running five stories each week and smaller ones scouting as well, it was a seller's market, and Kurt Vonnegut was delighted -- and comfortable -- being published regularly by The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Argosy, and others.

A collection of Vonnegut's previously published short stories that were not included in Welcome to the Monkey House. Like most short story collections, the quality varies - a few were truly excellent, most good, and a few "meh". As a document of a writer in the process of finding himself, I would highly recommend it. It was cool to see so many of the elements of his later novels popping up here in fits and starts.

At noon, Wednesday, July 26th, windowpanes in the small mountain towns of Sevier County, Tennessee, were rattled by the shock and faint thunder of a distant explosion rolling down the northwest slopes of the Great Smokies.

There are few evils in life... chips, chocolate, ice cream or gelato, and inexpensive book purchasing sites.
Book Outlet got me. No special sale or any special reason why. 19 books and $68 and change later.

This was my first experience with Vonnegut (that rascally "Middle Westerner") short stories. Some were amazing, some were just okay. Overall, I enjoyed the collection.

BethFishReads I've never tried his short stories 8y
britt_brooke @BethFishReads I prefer his novels but these stories were pretty entertaining. I think Welcome to the Monkey is a better known collection. I may read that soon. 👍🏻 8y
