Tom Waits on Tom Waits
Tom Waits on Tom Waits: Interviews and Encounters | Paul Jr Maher
6 posts | 9 to read
This autobiographical portrait of Tom Waits takes shape through a selection of more than 50 interviews. Starting with the first interview--on KPFK-FM's "Folkscene" in 1973--Waits speaks out on a variety of topics and shares something truly unique with his readers. In a rap that is a synthesis of inflections--Louis Armstrong, Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Mark Twain, hobo, pool hall attendant, vaudevillian huckster, musicologist par excellence, and a fresh slathering of the organic word-ooze of William S. Burroughs--Waits comes across as well read, informed, and lucidly aware of current pop culture. He delivers prose as crafted, poetic, potent, brilliant, and haunting as the lyrics of his best songs.

My favorite Waits song is probably Martha.

Not really book related but certainly “words” related. Because Tom Waits certainly knows how to use words. His entire collection is apparently being re-released in CD, vinyl, and streaming services. Wanted to share in case any of you nerds adore him as much as I.

vivastory I saw him in 2008 in St Louis. One of the best experiences of my life. 6y
Tonton @Ericalambbrown He is so great! Saw him live in NYC many years ago, one of the best concerts I‘ve experienced. 6y
Ericalambbrown @vivastory @tonton I‘m jealous! He‘s on my list of artists I really would like to see. (edited) 6y

I've never thought of formally #joiningafanclub but if I did, these would probably be my first picks across the music, film, and book realms. The Coen Brothers also introduced me to Cormac McCarthy so I'll be forever grateful to them for that, as well as their amazing films. #JuneTunz @Cinfhen

Izai.Amorim The Cohen brothers are the best film makers alive, no one has a comparable breadth. 8y
Billypar @Izai.Amorim You'll get no argument from me on that point 👏👏🎥📽🎬 8y
Cinfhen Excellent choice for fandom 8y

vivastory One of the best concerts of my life. Saw him at Fox Theater in St. Louis in 2008. Bought tickets day after returning from a road trip to see Radiohead. 8y
bitterbear Anyone seen the movie coffee and cigarettes? 8y
vivastory @bitterbear Love that movie. When I was a smoker, I'd occasionally run out of matches or my lighter would be dead. I always had a long red BBQ lighter though at my apartment. I called it my Bill Murray lighter in honor of his scene in the movie. 8y
bitterbear @vivastory lol its Bill mother f*cking Murry... 8y
