Pickpick

I read this on the plane on my way to the Stratford Festival (in Ontario) in preparation for seeing an English language performance of Michel Tremblay‘s classic. 15 working class women in 1960s Montreal with a lot to say about their lot in life: I loved it. I also love the colloquial language it‘s written in. #CanLit

Dilara How did the translator deal with joual? 1y
Lindy @Dilara I was disappointed in that. It was regular conversational English. Some Canadianisms like eh at the end of sentences. 1y
Dilara @Lindy That's better than nothing 😜 1y
Lindy @Dilara I guess 🤷‍♀️ 1y

TheKidUpstairs I've heard such great things about this year's festival, especially Les Belles-Souers. 1y
Singout Great play! One of my faves in my Québecois theater class. 1y
Lindy @TheKidUpstairs @Singout Thanks! Although I‘ve wanted to for years, I had never seen any version of the play. I read the original text on the plane on my way to the festival. It was a fine performance and I‘m looking forward to the other shows this week. 1y
Singout Have you ever seen Les fées ont soif? It blew my 20-year-old self away, although it was very much second-wave feminism. Banned in Quebec for a long time. 1y
Lindy @Singout Hadn‘t even heard of it. Now I want to see it. 😁 1y

Pickpick

A low pick for its place in Quebec theatre history. Tremblay was one of the first playwrights to use joual in his work, and the vernacular is certainly an adventure if you‘re not used to Quebec French 😂 I was not fond of solid walls of text some characters spoke; the bantering scenes were more effective.

Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira I never read “Les belles soeurs” but I‘ve read a few other Tremblay❣️ I saw the play about 10-15 years ago, memorable cast of women 😊 (edited) 4y
rabbitprincess @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira It would be a lively one to see on stage! 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @rabbitprincess it sure was, to add to the dynamic, it was a musical 🎶 😉 4y

This is not the play I'm seeing tonight but another one, in musical form. Should be fun. #happinessisresistance
