The Kappillan of Malta
The Kappillan of Malta | Nicholas Monsarrat
8 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
A classic novel set in the siege of Malta 1940-1942 from the bestselling author of The Cruel Sea Father Salvatore was a simple, lumbering priest, a Kappillan serving the poor Valetta, when war came out of the blue skies to pound the island to dust. Now amid the catacombs discovered by a chance bomb, he cared for the flood of homeless, starving, frightened people who sought shelter from the death that fell unceasingly from the sky. His story, and the story of Malta, is told in superbly graphic pictures of six days during the siege. Each of those days brought forth from the Kappillan a message of inspiration to keep them going - the legendary tales of six mighty events of Malta's history which shone through the centuries and gathered them together in a fervent belief in their survival.

#readaroundtheworld #malta A rather old fashioned tale of a parish priest serving the poor on Malta during WWII. He struggles with his faith while caring for a resilient people being crushed by the Italian/German siege against the Bristish base there. Speaking to them about the island‘s varied history of wars and sieges from the Phoenicians, Romans, and Turks up to the horrors of aerial bombing, I learned a huge amount about Malta history. ⬇️

Currey I marked it a PICK for read around the world although only so-so from a literature point of view. @Simona @rockpools @BookwormM 3y

Simona I finished Jutta Heim by Immanuel Mifsud and it was interesting story about lost love, well more obsession than love, mixed with political changes in Malta. It was so-so read for me also. 3y

The language and narrative voice are at times old fashioned and meandering but I LOVED this novel. It‘s a touching story of a parish priest and his faith through WW2 but the island and people of Malta are the stars. By the time I was finished I felt like I could walk the island and know it‘s paths, it‘s people and it‘s complex and often difficult history. So many good things to say. I recommend entirely! #backpackeurope

arubabookwoman I (unexpectedly) loved Montserrat‘s The Cruel Sea when I read it a few years ago—great storyteller. So I‘m stacking this one, even though it doesn‘t sound like a book I would ordinarily choose. 6y

Next stop on my #backpackeurope virtual trip is the beautiful Maltese islands. Valletta is a beautiful sight arriving by sea ...

bookandcat Ooh what country route are you taking to get to and from Malta? I am so bad with geography 😂 6y
Itchyfeetreader It‘s 50km south of Sicily and there is a ferry which I think is allowed for islands. Less clear if I can get to Greece next which was my plan! 6y

#12daysofxmasphoto #givingasgifts

To avoid spoilers for my secret Santa matches, this is a book I am gifting to my mum for Christmas.

3 years ago, my mum moved to Malta. Malta is rich in history and now that she is settled she has been trying to find out more about it.

I chose to gift this book as it is fiction based on a difficult period of Maltese history during WW2, and it has excellent reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.
