Girl Singer
Girl Singer: A Memoir of the Girl Next Door | Joan Barthel, Rosemary Clooney
2 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
At the top of her form and topping the charts, Rosemary Clooney looks back at a life of triumph and tragedy more dramatic than any work of fiction. Rosemary Clooney made her first public appearance at the age of three, on the stage of the Russell Theater in her hometown of Maysville, Kentucky, singing, "When Your Hair Has Turned to Silver," an odd but perhaps prophetic choice for one so young. She has been singing ever since: on local radio; with Tony Pastor's orchestra; in big-box-office Hollywood films; at the Hollywood Bowl, the London Palladium, and Carnegie Hall ; on her own television series; and at venues large and small across the country and around the world. The list of Clooney's friends and intimates reads like a who's who of show business royalty: Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Tony Bennett, Janet Leigh, Humphrey Bogart, and Billie Holiday, to name just a few. She's known enormous professional triumphs and deep personal tragedies. At the age of twenty-five, Clooney married the erudite and respected actor Jose Ferrer, sixteen years her senior and light-years more sophisticated. Trouble started almost immediately when, on her honeymoon, she discovered that he had already been unfaithful. Finally, after having five children while she almost single-handedly supported the entire family and endured Ferrer's numerous, unrepentant infidelities, she filed for divorce. From there her life spiraled downward into depression, addiction to various prescription drugs, and then, in 1968, a breakdown and hospitalization. After years spent fighting her way back to the top, Clooney is married to one of her first and long-lost loves- a true fairy tale with a happy ending. She's been nominated for four Grammys in six years and has two albums at the top of the Billboard charts. In the words of one of Stephen Sondheim's Follies showgirls, she could well be singing, triumphantly, "I'm still here!" From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

I went down the rabbit hole of Wikipedia with this one. Rosemary worked & socialized with so many icons of Hollywood, and she writes about some of the affairs & shenanigans of those stars. Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich, Bob Hope, Ava Gardner..... She is very open about her struggles with pills, her first husband‘s infidelity, & a hospitalization for depression/psychosis in the ‘60s. I found this really interesting.

My sister wanted to visit Rosemary Clooney‘s house in Augusta, Ky, so we went last weekend. In case you don‘t know, she was a famous singer/actress starting in the late ‘40s, starred in White Christmas, & has a certain Sexiest Man Alive as a nephew. The one Miss America that Ky has had bought the house with her husband (who was a Lt. Gov) after Rosemary died in 2002 & turned it into a museum. My sis & I were really excited to get a tour by Miss 👇

Scochrane26 America. She & husband give the staff a day off sometimes & do the tours. Then, we learned that George‘s mom owns an antique shop we had gone in, so of course we went back to make sure we saw her. My sis & I aren‘t usually people who get to meet the fancy folk of Ky. The dresses & fan from the above White Christmas pic are in the home. A pic of Rosemary in her older years w/ George. Her oldest son, Miguel Ferrer was in NCIS:LA 👇 (edited) 4y
Scochrane26 & other shows but died a few years ago (shown w/ George). I‘m almost done with her autobiography, & it‘s interesting. All the old Hollywood glamour—Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, etc. 4y
Reagan Oh that is so neat! I really liked Miguel Ferrer in The Stand miniseries (original). 4y
