The Assault on Reason
The Assault on Reason: How the Politics of Blind Faith Subvert Wise Decision-Making | Al Gore
8 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
At the time George W. Bush ordered forces to invade Iraq, 70 per cent of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was linked to 9/11. When asked to list what stuck in their minds about the campaign, voters most frequently named two Bush TV ads that played to fears of terrorism. How did the US get here? And how much damage has been done to the functioning of democracy? Never has there been a worse time to lose the capacity to face long-term challenges, from national security to the economy, from issues of health and social welfare to the environment. As Al Gore's farsighted and powerful manifesto for clear thinking shows, there is precious little time to waste.

Pickpick

Raise your hand if you have found yourself asking "how did we get here?" I had many incidents of deja-vu with this book- a lot of the things that the Trump administration has done also occurred with GW Bush, though less overtly. A bit disheartening to read but important nevertheless.

My current commute audio. Yesterday I learned about the psychological and physiological effects of fear (and fear-mongering) and today the history of the modern right wing ideology. Not sure what I was expecting but it's good so far.

Mehso-so

I found myself furiously nodding a lot of the times while listening to this. When Al Gore is on, he is in. But the book is pretty dry for long stretches and reads more like a scientific paper. But there is still so much good information in it, that it's definitely worth to read. It was published back in 2007 and information like this doesn't age well.

I just stared this, but so far... wow 😳... I think our Oompa Loompa Elect studied this book 📚. All that fear mongering sure paid off.
