Death Going Down
Death Going Down | María Angélica Bosco
10 posts | 12 read | 37 to read
In the early hours of the morning, a woman is found in the elevator of a plush apartment block on Santa Fe Road, Buenos Aires. She's young, gorgeous and dead. With this opening image starts one of the greatest crime novels ever written in Argentina. A woman has been murdered and it is immediately apparent that all the suspects have secrets to hide. Death Going Down containes all the ingredients of a classic detective novel, and is set during the aftermath of World War II, when many immigrants were making their way to Argentina, some of them with dark pasts in Europe to hide...

This is a wham bam mystery. Under 200 pages, it doesn‘t have much in the way of atmosphere, context, or fleshed out characters. That said, it was rather a fun, quick mystery.

Again, I think the translation weakened the original novel. Not quite Agatha Christie level, but an interesting glimpse of Argentina in the 1950s. There are several German characters escaping their past...

Actually finished this book already but my new one isn‘t showing up in here (Find the Star: Stars of the New gods). Now I‘m out having a delicious cider and some lunch with my reading. #24in48

For such a short book, I found the story a little convoluted, but I liked the setting and writing. To call her the Argentine Agatha Christie is an apt description. There‘s even a culminating scene where the suspects are gathered as the murderer is revealed. This would be a good choice for the #ReadHarder challenge genre fiction in translation task.

A decent story, but editing issues and text layout made it hard to tell who was speaking during conversations. Also annoying gender stereotypes and comments - the novel is older, but they still grated.

An interesting, Agatha Christie-style mystery from an Argentinian author. Shirt and enjoyable, would be a good palate cleanser (image from the internet). Counting this one for the set in/author from South America category. #ReadHarder @bookriot
