From the author of Cry, The Beloved Country comes a powerful novel of terror and remorse “written in exquisitely balanced prose” (Chicago Sun-Times) about a white policeman who has an affair with a native girl in South Africa. After violating his country’s ironclad law governing relationships between the races, a young white South African police lieutenant must struggle alone against the censure of an inflexible society, his family, and himself.

No blood, guts and gore here, but an unintentionally creepy cover.

Look into my eyes look into my eyes look into my eyes...

The book itself is not at all creepy. Written by the author of Cry, the Beloved Country, it is a shattering, punch in the gut of a book about the interpersonal effects of racism in a family and a society. I read it many years ago and it won't go away. It is in my heart now.

shawnmooney Wonderful! I have read Cry a couple times and loved it – never got around to reading any of his other stuff. 8y
Libby1 @shawnmooney - you won't regret reading this. I must look out for anything else he's written. 8y
Libby1 @shawnmooney - I've just ordered Instrument of Thy Peace by the same author. I just may develop an Author Ideas Crush now (gotta think of a better way of saying that!). 8y
Kimzey I read this book in high school, and, you're right, the story stays with you. My copy is long gone, but I recall that my classmates and I thought Alan Paton's unsmiling photo on the back cover was creepy. Another book I want to reread, thanks! 🇿🇦 8y
Libby1 Great, @Kimzey . I read it many years ago in America but picked up this retro copy somewhere in England or Ireland for 29 pence. I needed to have it near me. 8y
