The Best American Short Stories 2015
The Best American Short Stories 2015 | Heidi Pitlor, T.C. Boyle
6 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
In his introduction to this one hundredth volume of the beloved Best American Short Stories, guest editor T. C. Boyle writes, “The Model T gave way to the Model A and to the Ferrari and the Prius . . . modernism to postmodernism and post-postmodernism. We advance. We progress. We move on. But we are part of a tradition.” Boyle’s choices of stories reflect a vibrant range of characters, from a numb wife who feels alive only in the presence of violence to a new widower coming to terms with his sudden freedom, from a missing child to a champion speedboat racer. These stories will grab hold and surprise, which according to Boyle is “what the best fiction offers, and there was no shortage of such in this year’s selections.” Mulling over the question of character likability, series editor Heidi Pitlor asks, “Did I like these characters? I very much liked reading their stories, as did T. C. Boyle.” Here are characters who “are living, breathing people who screw up terribly and want and need and think uneasy thoughts.”   T. C. BOYLE, guest editor, has published fifteen novels and ten collections of short stories. He won the PEN/Faulkner Award in 1988 for his novel World’s End and the Prix Médicis étranger for The Tortilla Curtain in 1995, as well as the 2014 Henry David Thoreau Prize for excellence in nature writing. His most recent book is the novel The Harder They Come. HEIDI PITLOR, series editor, is a former senior editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. She is the author of the novels The Birthdays and The Daylight Marriage.

To readers who tend to think primarily in terms of liking or disliking characters: these people are fictional. They do not stand before us asking to be liked...They ask to be seen and heard and maybe even understood...let‘s pretend these characters are in fact real...Let us open up at least a little to those we might not like...To me, facing those we might not want to face is crucial to living in a diverse world.

PJPeski Reminds me of some of the characters in My Absolute Darling. You may hate them, but you are also driven to understand. 7y

Been looking forward to seeing this goodreads graphic all year! Not sure I enjoyed as many of the books that I read in 2016 but I was more analytical, too. This is my personal best number, and although Litsy folk often go much higher, I'm pretty happy here. :) https://www.goodreads.com/user/year_in_books/2016/1083872

Am I the only one who has to take a break between finishing one novel (the fantastic Everything I Never Told You!) and starting the next? Short story palate cleansers, you know? In other news, I'm only halfway through this and it's time to buy the 2016 edition already...yikes!

This #FunFridayPhoto says a lot about my lack of a relationship with sports. :p. But I remembered this short story by Ben Fowlkes about a pro-wrestler who might be on his way out, professionally, and the aftermath of losing a big match. I wrote in my GoodReads review that the dialogue cadences built character, and the protagonist's self pity helped me consider the inner lives of these athletes.

Mehso-so

Hit or miss collection - they're all well-written pieces but this group seemed to have a lot of stories in the "um, what was *that* about?" category.

Been reading this series for better than 20 years now, and have never—even when Erdrich edited—put 4 stars in a row like this. Also? Nothing at all against Boyle; I probably wouldn't make any of these (annuals) a Pick. But there's always some gold.

tkmadden Thunderstruck is so amazing 9y
SGJ Completely blew me away. I was late somewhere, because I couldn't put that story down. 9y
bradiation I'm reading it now. Wasn't super invested until I got to the Ms. 9y
