pickAustralia is a buggy, mysterious, heat-tortured land in this story of a boy returned to the white european world after healing and growing up with an aboriginal clan. The writing and character studies are brilliant. That said, the ending felt rushed and unsatisfying.

so-soThis is a difficult review because this book is so beautifully written. The prose is gorgeous and lyrical, and there are some sections that are tattooed on my brain. But it is problematic. Malouf manages to have an entire book with many elements of the Aboriginal culture that silences the people of that culture. Aborigines are present as an idea, but not as individuals. The main representative of the aboriginal in the text is a white man.
pickThis was a deep look at racism from Australia. I'm almost certain now that Australian is its own language. Bonus points for matching my cat.
