Dancing at the River's Edge: A Patient and Her Doctor Negotiate Life with Chronic Illness
Dancing at the River's Edge: A Patient and Her Doctor Negotiate Life with Chronic Illness | Alida Brill, Michael D Lockshin
6 posts | 1 read | 19 to read
An invaluable resource for medical professionals, victims of chronic illnesses, and their loved ones, this dual memoir by a doctor and his longtime patient traces the growth of their unique friendship over a span of decades. By exploring the bond between caregiver and sufferer, this sensitive account evokes not only the constant day-to-day frustrations and emotional toll suffered by the chronically ill, but also an understanding of the mental struggles and conflicts that a conscientious doctor must face in deciding how best to treat a patient without compromising personal freedoms. In alternating chapters, the narrative explores the frustration, joy, despair, grief, and pain on both sides of the doctor-patient relationship.

I read this book with two perspectives. I am a massage therapist and specialize in chronic pain relief. I am also a chronic pain and illness patient. I didn't know anything about the authors, but @KrisConstantReader suggested the book so I got it. What a great read! Alida (the patient and feminist researcher) made some connections I will return to often.

Wow. I was not expecting this fascinating connection between #feminism and #chronicillness. Brava Alida!

Suet624 Really interesting and, once said, seems obvious. 8y
Jess_Read_This I agree with @Suet624. I hadn't considered the effects on a the male partner and once it is laid out there, it makes complete sense. Thanks for sharing! @BarbaraTheBibliophage 8y
Lindy Interesting observations. 🤔 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 @Jess_Read_This @Lindy She tries to make some sense of the statistics via her own experiences. Wise words! 8y
Robothugs Speaking within the realm of my particular chronic illnesses, I've seen quite a few women end up divorced. It's devastating - but isn't in most cases due to a lack of love. This is an interesting explanation that would make sense. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Robothugs Yes I've seen the same thing in my circles. Devastating in so many levels. 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 I'm sorry we are in the same club. Litsy is yay! Lyme is yuck! 💚 8y
Suet624 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Agreed. At least when I can't get off the couch I can read. And at this point I actually remember what I've read. 8y

TwinklingBooks I have a longterm illness. This book is on my #TBR. books always help you 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 There were definitely many times that I'd read the same sentence over and over, while comprehending nothing. Happy to be back in the reading world again! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TwinklingBooks I'm sorry to hear you're raving long term illness too. I found this book recently, and have been pleasantly surprised at the authors' wisdom. I am so grateful for books in my life! 8y
TwinklingBooks @BarbaraTheBibliophage me too! Books and my cats keep me sane. And it keeps happening to me too when you read same sentence but nothing registers. 8y
Desha Thank you for posting about this book! I have a chronic lung disease called bronchiectasis and I'm on disability retirement from teaching because of it. It's taken me a loooong time to gain even a modicum of acceptance of he ways my life hasx 8y
Desha been changed. It's a daily struggle/slog through the difficulties lol😜. When I'm not crying I have to laugh at the absurdness of it all! Thanks for sending out some encouragement! ☺️ 8y
Desha And yes...dogs and books are THE best! Yay for Litsy! ❤️📚📚❤️ 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Desha There are a lot of us here facing chronic illness, so you're not alone and you're among friends. I wasn't sure what to expect about this book and truly feel it's a gem. Hope it helps you! Another good one from an author with pulmonary hypertension is 8y
Desha Thanks!! Definitely already added to my TBR list! That's awesome...so glad we can support one another! 🤒😢❤️☺️😊 8y

It is exceedingly hard to admit this or something like it. I respect Alida for having the guts to put it on paper in such a public way. #chronicillness

Adding this one to the mix this week. It's from my NetGalley shelf and I probably should have read / reviewed it a while ago. Hope it's interesting!
