I should have bailed. This book was all over the place, jumping from one event to the next and back again. The description at the back is misleading - the story is not at all about saving Roxanne Brown, which could have been an interesting court case to follow, especially had it involved a deeper look at the juxtaposition of racism and law in the late 1800s. Quite frankly it reads like a soap opera.
