That Eye, the Sky
That Eye, the Sky | Tim Winton
1 post | 5 read | 2 to read
In this modern Australian classic, award-winning author Tim Winton tells the story of young Ort Flack and his struggle to come to grips with the forces pulling his family apart. An extraordinary snapshot of boyhood, That Eye, the Sky is also a powerful exploration of the nature of hope and faith. Ort doesn't have a bad life. He mucks around with his best pal, Fat Cherry; he wonders what his sister Tegwyn's so mad about and why his grandma's disappeared inside herself; he looks up at the sky and thinks it's like a big blue eye looking right back at him. But when Dad isn't back from work when he's supposed to be and a strange car pulls into the drive, Ort's life is thrown into turmoil. Suddenly, Mum doesn't seem as strong as she used to, Fat starts saying bad things, and the stranger knocking on the door seems to know an awful lot about the Flacks.

A different take on the mysterious stranger trope

vkois88 Super creepy looking! 6y

CarolynM @Centique Tough one for me. Lots of people love everything he's ever written, others love some and loathe others and not always the same ones. I liked this one and I also liked Dirt Music and absolutely loved The Turning (connected short stories). Cloudstreet, which most people love, left me so cold I dropped it at the 100 page mark. I think @MrsMalaprop is a fan, maybe she'd like to comment? 6y
MrsMalaprop @Centique Am a massive Winton fan. Have read almost everything he‘s ever written & rate them all, whilst loving some more than others. Cloudstreet is a funny one for me. I liked and appreciated it, but can kind of see why it might have left you cold @CarolynM . 6y
Centique Ok I think I‘ll start with The Turning and see how I go! Thanks for the advice both of you 😊 @MrsMalaprop @CarolynM 6y
