I enjoyed this craft book. It definitely helps dispel the mystery behind controlling theme or lessons characters must learn.

BookDadGirlDad I read this along with her other. Fantastic whether you write or not. 3y
SoapboxEdits @BookDadGirlDad The science and history behind storytelling is interesting. I have Wired For Story on my TBR list. Your rec‘ mighta just bumped it up, thanks! 3y
BookDadGirlDad @SoapboxEdits I read them back to back. There is a young, indie writer on youtube who sings the praises of these books and has several videos on the principles. Her name is Abbie Emmons. 3y
SoapboxEdits @BookDadGirlDad Hey! I didn‘t see the notification for this! Thanks for telling me about Abbie, I‘ll look her up. 3y

On my #TBR is Story Genius by Lisa Cron.
💛
It is a step by step guide on how to create a compelling novel. It use brain science to make it work.
💛
The book came highly recommended by a friend and I thought it might be useful to help improve my messy method of plotting (or not really plotting) a novel.
💛
Are you a plotter, discovery writer, or something in between?

Hey #writersoflitsy one of my goals for this year is to read one book on writing each month, so I‘m hosting a book club - the Read, Write, Grow writer‘s book club. February‘s pick is Story Genius by Lisa Cron. If you want to join in, post with #readwritegrowbc and tag me @Charityann 😊 Full details on my blog:

deirdrebeecher I loved this book. I can't use her planning strategies but I think it is a great way to develop characters. 4y

DNF: many of her statements about psychology and anthropology are neither attributed nor as logically sound as they could be. I advise going into this book knowing that the protagonist's internal journey as a baseline for moulding story is one strategy among many, and for some of us authors, a combination approach is what ends up working best.

GingerAntics Oh I hate the “one size fits all” approach to writing. Ugh. Don‘t blame you for not finishing. 6y
DoonTheGoon Just goes to show how everyone works differently. My partner is a writer and found this book super insightful!!! 6y
RaimeyGallant @DoonTheGoon Exactly. I expected to like this just because of how much my writer friends do. 6y
Trashcanman I like that picture. I like your shoes. 6y
RaimeyGallant @Trashcanman Thanks! They're from grass-fed cows. 6y

As far as the asterisk goes, I've been there, done that. I'm about 1/3 of the way through this book, and I think applying her approach will make a big difference in my storytelling. #amwriting #writersoflitsy

CrowCAH Yay for creative writers! What are you working on currently? 7y
syasutake Thanks @CrowCAH! I'm working on a contemporary YA novel with some fantasy elements. Are you a writer too? 7y
CrowCAH @syasutake sounds fantastic! 🐉 Yes, I'm a creative writer, too; working on a historical Golden Age of Piracy romance adventure novel! ⚔️☠️⚓️ (edited) 7y

syasutake That sounds amazing @CrowCAH! 7y
CrowCAH @syasutake I'll have to keep your name in mind, so when I start seeing your books on shelves, I can be like, "That girl is a Litsy friend of mine"! ? 7y
syasutake @CrowCAH One can dream, right? I will keep you in mind too. Maybe someday you'll be posting about your book on Litsy! 7y
CrowCAH @syasutake of course, that's the goal to get it published! 7y
MyNamesParadise Pretty sure I've bought this one! 7y
syasutake @MyNamesParadise I recommend it. 7y

Confession: Despite having written a few novels and earning my MFA in writing and somehow landing an agent, I HATE writing craft books. I get bored, I don't find them helpful. But my friend has talked me into giving this one a try because it might help me with a novel I'm scared to write, and it has inspired this latest coaster for writer types. Fear less. Type more. https://www.etsy.com/listing/504390862/scrabble-tile-coaster-fear-less-type
