When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history.Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret: Mordecai was Rachel s father, too.As the country moved toward war, Adelaide and Rachel struggled to navigate their newfound sisterhood from love and resentment to betrayal and, ultimately, forgiveness. Now, facing these Union soldiers as General Sherman advances nearer, their bond is put to the ultimate test. Will the plantation be spared? Or will everything they ve lived for be lost?"

#Bookmail is the best mail!

I had to order something for my Secret Santa and to get free postage I had to top up my order with a book for myself.

I‘m now on Santa‘s Naughty List!

"Sister of Mine retains the story and the characters of the previous edition, but in addition to the new title, it's received a sensitive editorial eye and a beautiful new cover ..." (Sabra Waldfogel)

Here are some audiobooks that stick out in my mind because of the narrator. Of course there are others that I enjoyed. But these narrators stand out for me.

🎧 Sister of Mine by Sabra Waldfogel, narrated by Bahni Turpin
🎧 Troublemaker by Leah Remini, narrated by Leah Remini
🎧 Yellow Crocus by Laila Ibrahim, narrated by Bahni Turpin
🎧 The Book of Harlan by Bernice McFadden, narrated by Robin Miles

TheNextBook One day I promise I will try audiobooks... maybe next year 😉 8y
HippieChickHomeschool Bahni Turpin could read the phone book and I'd happily listen! 8y
Lacythebookworm Exactly what @HippieChickHomeschool said! 🙌 8y

I just saw this on Audible. Congratulations to Bahni Turpin for 2016 NARRATOR OF THE YEAR! I've heard her on earlier productions. And she has set a standard in the audiobook industry. Her name on any audio title guarantees a stamp of approval. I was blown away by her German accent in "Sister of Mine." There's nothing she can't do! I must select a few of her other projects. Ladies and gentlemen, Narrator of the Year, Bahni Turpin.

HardcoverHearts She is amazing 8y
Lindy Congratulations to her. Love her work. ❤️ 8y
Lacythebookworm That's great! I love listening to her! 👂 ❤️😊 8y

MamaGina That's wonderful! I purchased this title with narration on my kindle app when you described the story and the range of voices she portrayed ... now even more excited to read it 🤓 8y
DebinHawaii I just got introduced to her with the audiobook of The Underground Railroad and she is amazing! 👍😀 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @Lacythebookworm -- I love listening to her too. It's funny, though, 'cause the nasal tone of her natural voice lends itself to some characters yet disappears for others. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @HardcoverHearts, @Lindy -- Yes. She is amazing and do deserving of this distinction. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @MamaGina -- so glad you got it. That eBook/audiobook package is really a deal, isn't it? Last night, I purchased the combo for less than the member's discount of the audio alone. And I didn't have to use a credit. But I digress. Congratulations Bahni‼️ 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @debinhawaii -- I don't remember the first book I heard her on. But, as my audio selections increased, I caught myself thinking, "That's the same lady." Her voice is so recognizable that I knew it was her. I only have the print edition of "Underground Railroad." Think I'll get on a library hold list for the audio. 8y
EvieBee I love her!! 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Yes, @EvieBee84 -- she's awesome. 8y

Mehso-so

Waldfogel is a graceful and skillful writer. I was pleased at detailed discussions regarding the business aspects of running a plantation. SoM offers a unique perspective of the Civil War, slavery, and reconstruction. The "romantic relationship" was the exception -- not the rule. The original title, "Slave and Sister" is at the top of my TBR. The moment it arrives, whatever I'm reading gets bumped. THEN I'll compare "Sister of Mine" to it.

tpixie I'm interested in the comparison! 8y

SENSITIVE EDITORIAL EYE?
I wonder about the publisher's intended audience. Unsuspecting readers will be of the erroneous notion that master/slave romance -- not rape -- was the reason for slave children of white masters. I know not all slaves were mistreated. But most weren't favored as in this novel. http://www.sabrawaldfogel.com/books
Having said that, I like the story but not the plot. Awaiting arrival of the original edition. #quote

The voice of Bahni Turpin catapults an audiobook to must-read status. In "Sister of Mine," she so seamlessly morphs between toddler, German slaveholder and speculator, Jewish textile merchant, field slave, house slave, and Confederate captain that you forget there's only one narrator. Turpin's delivery includes the element of emotion. I think that's what sets her apart. I wonder how my reading of the print copy will be influenced by her voice.

Yossarian It sounds great! 8y

The 1864 bookcase was just as treasured as our packed shelves, ereaders, and tablets of today.

"The smallest room had another rocking chair with Rachel's mending basket next to it, filled with clothes to mend. There was a little table with a candlestick on it and an inkwell and a pen. ➡️And a pine bookcase with three shelves. Her book of Shakespeare sat there, as did Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, and a Bible." ⬅️

One disadvantage of audiobooks is that if you don't clip a passage when you hear it, finding it can be frustrating. I won't waste any more time trying to find this one. Here's a reasonable paraphrase. I slapped the steering wheel and guffawed when I heard the slave sister tell the holder sister during a heated argument: "You so useless! If you were a slave, yo' own mama woulda sold you!" Now that's pretty useless.

I love audiobooks. Just learned how to pronounce daguerreotype. 📷🖼 https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&channel=iphone_bm&biw=320&bih=460&ei...

Reviewsbylola I'm about to google it to see if I pronounce it correctly. 😂 8y
BookishFeminist I can't tell you how many times I've discovered I've been pronouncing a word incorrectly for years while listening to an audiobook 😂 8y
Megabooks History of Photography was one of my favorite classes in college, so I do know how to say it. 😉😃 8y
anwade88 Wow I've totally been pronouncing that incorrectly 😂 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @BookishFeminist -- @Ebooksandcooks -- @anwade88 -- I don't think I've ever spoken the word; but, until now, I might have placed the accent on the first syllable instead of the second. The correct pronunciation does roll off the tongue though. 8y

The audio of this title is very good. "Sister of Mine" is now on my TBB (to be bought) list. I am descended from North Georgia slaves; and I recognize the names of counties and towns from my genealogical research. I'll buy the print copy to absorb more of the content. As far as the narration, two words -- Bahni Turpin. I still have 17 hours of listening to go which will make this week's commute go well. ??

shawnmooney Wow, sounds incredible! 8y
Libby1 This sounds incredible. (As in excellent, not impossible to believe!). I've added it to my TBR. 8y
BookInMyHands Bahni Turpin also reads The True Meaning of Smekday. She's fantastic! 8y
