“A definitive, deeply moving inquiry into the life of the young, imperiled artist, and a masterful exegesis of Diary of a Young Girl…Extraordinary testimony to the power of literature and compassion” –Booklist (starred review)In Anne Frank: The Book, the Life, the Afterlife, Francine Prose, author of Reading Like a Writer, deftly parses the artistry, ambition, and enduring influence of Anne Frank’s beloved classic, The Diary of a Young Girl. Approved by both the Anne Frank House Foundation in Amsterdam and the Anne Frank-Fonds in Basel, run by the Frank family, this work of literary criticism unravels the complex, fascinating story of the diary and effectively makes the case for it being a work of art from a precociously gifted writer.

Not really a biography but a nice look at how the diary got important and the many media versions.

Do you consider the Diary of Anne Frank a work of art or just a diary? So curious what others think.

LauraBeth Given the circumstances the words were written in, along with the fact that her words are still read today and are capable of influence, and therefore because of that, can can still have positive effect on changing people's attitudes towards humanity - I'd vote work of art 8y
GlitteryOtters I've been thinking about this over the past day, since you posted, & I would say it is a work of art. Just because it is "found art" doesn't mean it is not actual art. Art doesn't exist in a vacuum and, yes, context does have a big impact on your perception of this, but I think that is part of what makes it art...for many of us, it was one of the 1st forms of art we consumed where we had to interpret it thru its historical & social significance 8y
GlitteryOtters Since so much of understanding complex art is understanding it in context, this book is invaluable. It is like the gateway drug towards getting us into interpreting books, photography, paintings, etc., in context & once you learn to consume entertainment in a more nuanced manner, you get so much more from it. That alone makes it art in my book (but it is SO MUCH MORE than just that, but that would be enough to qualify it) 8y
flyfarther79 @LauraBeth @GlitteryOtters I consider it a work of art too. The author discussed how some do not consider it a work of art or literature but others like us do. An interesting thing I found was that Anne edited/revised and added to her diary to make a version that could be read after hearing the exiled Dutch minister of education, art & science called for the establishment of a national archive to house ordinary documents from the war. 8y
