giving this book a 'light pick' rating since it was pretty fun but I don't feel compelled to read the rest of the series. mysteries aren't really my thing but I enjoyed this. this book is a neat take on a detective procedural set in a future version of Singapore where gods and demons hang around and heaven and hell are more tangible locations with bureaucratic issues. I think this would make for a solid movie or Netflix short series.

getting my reading stack sorted for spring break! borrowing 86 from my friend after hearing it was decent, working on snake agent for book club and squeezing in the 2nd wayward children book since I finished this month's issue of the dark magazine.

I may have also bought a few too many cheap kindle books.

This was really really good. The world building is well done, no long expositions but inserted glimpses in the plot and action. You "see" the world thru the eyes of the characters, the writer is not telling you about it. I especially liked the mythology of Hell and demons. I liked how Chen walks a very narrow line and "doesn't" fit in anywhere really. I liked the political plot and comments.

Liz Williams' detective inspector Chen series would be awesome on the big screen. Near future where spirits walk the Earth. Love this series. #seasonsreadings2016 #thisshouldbeamovie

I liked the world Williams created for this book but I felt that the book itself could have been better. Maybe it was a bit too complicated in my taste or something. Still it was a nice read.
