17-year-old Hank Kurby is an example of a screw-up of the century. After he accidentally sets a fire on Amanda's Carlisle lawn while trying to ask her out using sparklers. Hank wants to put everything behind him and pretend it never happened, but there is a witness. Payton Breedlove is a loner and she saw the whole thing. Payton blackmails Hank into an unusual friendship. Hank learns that Payton has secrets, secrets that may change everything.

The story is about two twins Justin and Perry. Perry has a brain condition that can cause him to feel anxious in different places and circumstances. When Justin's and Perry's father passes away, Justin becomes Perry's caretaker. Justin and Perry go to Canada for a road trip of a lifetime. They go on this trip so that Perry can search for the Ogopogo which is Perry's favorite animal/myth and to offer their mother a chance to atone for past wrongs.
