The Hate U Give | Angie Thomas

Pickpick

I can now proudly say that I have finished this novel. The Hate U Give is a novel written in first person point of view as Starr, the protagonist is narrating her story. After previously reading how Starr witnesses the murder of her best friend Khalil and having to be faced with tedious interviews and trials, justice still is not served for Khalil.

gracehartman Officer Tom Cruise, the officer who shot Khalil was not punished for his wrongdoings. This sparked anger inside the citizens. The news of Khalil's death made national attention and Starr was interviewed on live television to advocate her story. After seeing riots break out in the streets of her town, she decided to take part. Flipping over cars, protesting and chanting, even throwing tear gas at cops were actions Starr took to express her anger. 4y
gracehartman Unfortunately the riots caused Starr's father's shop to be burned down but Mr. Lewis, the barber shop owner next door agreed to let him buy out the building. Starr learned a valuable lesson to never back down. Your voice matters. 4y
gracehartman The theme of this novel really explores the topic of global issues such as racism, sexism, discrimination, etc. It also explores he idea on how your voice matters and you should never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in. 4y
gracehartman If you like books which can both warm your heart and can make you think critically and theoretically, I highly recommend this novel. 4y

Pickpick

The Hate U Give is a novel following the story of Starr, a young black girl, and her struggles with racism, peer pressure and grief. After having to witness her close friend's life be violently taken away by One-Fifteen, Starr is faced with trials and interviews regarding his death. Having to watch riot after riot break out in her city, Start is faced with the decision of either to stay quiet or to speak out.

gracehartman Although I am not quite finished the novel, I have picked up a theme of choice and hardships throughout the novel. Starr is constantly being faced with various life-changing choices that are much too dramatic for a teen-girl to face. The hardships in which she endured began to be the center of her mental struggles and relationship problems. This theme really relates to global issues as well such as racism, sexism, discrimination, etc. 4y
