Poison | Chris Wooding
Pickpick

The great thing about reading fiction by Chris Wooding is that he likes to turn the world so that humans are no longer the dominant species, per se. Poison puts this aspect of Wooding's work in the foreground. A rich fairytale-esque world plays host to a unique and gripping story; I couldn't get enough.

God I love this book. It's creepy, it's convoluted, it keeps you guessing. The world that Wooding has created here is gorgeously and darkly crafted, and I yearn for more fiction like this.

The Girl Who Could Fly | Victoria Forester
Pickpick

This one was incredible for a very long list of reasons, but the thing I found so refreshing is that the characters are exceptionally young; Piper herself is nine, and the eldest, Conrad, is only twelve. Their childlike view of the world gives the book a uniqueness and depth not seen in very much fiction today.

Legend | Marie Lu
Panpan

The concept was great, but, like so many YA writers today, Lu lets that plot and concept sink into nothingness beneath a vapid true love teenage romance. Though I don't dislike the relationship between Day and June, Lu allows it to eclipse everything else in her novel; an utter waste of a good concept.

Island of the Dolls | Jeremy Bates
Mehso-so

This one was ok, as far as horror novels go. The main plot was pretty standard, but I really did like the flashbacks into the life of the little girl; the breadth of description and creepiness of the narrative in those sections kept me reading. I didn't find it so much frightening as chilling and sad.

The Dead Run: A Novel | Adam Mansbach
Pickpick

I read a lot of books about zombies. Like a lot. That said, this is one of the better ones. A blend of action thriller and occultism, The Dead Run is addictive until the very last page.

Debutantes | Cora Harrison
Panpan

I was ever so disappointed with this one. The blurb promised that it would be full of intrigue and romance... and it wasn't. "Light on plot development" doesn't even begin to cover how flat and lifeless this book is.

The Sopaths | Piers Anthony
Bailedbailed

If I'm completely honest, this one absolutely sucked. I liked the concept - I'm all for creepy possessed children - but Piers Anthony clearly had another agenda. The plot fell flat by chapter 2, and his constant sexualization of a nine year old girl is enough to make your stomach roll. So awful I couldn't finish.

The Beautiful Land | Alan Averill
Pickpick

Got dimensional travel? This one was SO. GOOD. Averill does really well in terms of character development and general description. I found the general plot line a little stereotypical, but the way he weaves the story around it is so incredible.

The Faithful | S. M. Freedman
Pickpick

Get ready for chills... The Faithful had me hooked until the last word. The characters were vivid, and the plot was strung so tightly that there was no room for any rest, which was great. I highly recommend it for people who like things that are out of the ordinary.

Wow! Pete Earley takes you into the world of Tony Ciaglia, who has an unusual pastime; he corresponds with serial killers. This was an incredible book; probably one of the best non-fiction books I've read in a while.
