Thirsty: A Novel | Jas Hammonds
Pickpick

Though this book is a raw portrayal of addiction, trying to fit in, and feeling unworthy, it is written in a way that feels well targeted to its YA audience.
Thirsty is great at putting you into the mind of the main character.
Please check the content warnings before reading this story (they are included at the beginning of the book). Hammonds introduced conversations concerning race and gender, and also on attitudes around drinking, so well.

We Deserve Monuments | Jas Hammonds
Pickpick

This book went straight to my heart!
The themes of generational trauma, racial biases, societal expectations, friendship, and love were well done. The complications and anxieties... but also the beauty of finding community.
Some chapters give us perspective from other characters throughout that paint a full picture outside of just what Avery experienced.
But it never felt like there was too much going on, and I was eager to see how it all ended!

How to Heal a Gryphon | Meg Cannistra
Pickpick

How to Heal a Gryphon is a great book for kids that like fantasy and magic, and who love animals!
This story was fun with great themes, and I would recommend it. Even though it's middle grade, it was still enjoyable for me as an adult.
There are several Italian words, phrases, and references. If the reader is unfamiliar with them and wants to enrich the experience a bit, looking up those details can add some extra learning along the way as well!
