The protagonist Greg Gaines brings us through his Senior high school experience. He expresses his thoughts on the social hierarchy, the various cliques, and his previous relationships. A girl from one of these relationships is with Rachel Kushner, he discovers news from his mother that she had been recently diagnosed with leukaemia.

chaelan.villacin The perspective used within this novel is the first person point of view, the readers receive insights on his thoughts.
Techniques used within Me and Earl and the Dying Girl include scripts, we get to see how the whole situation is played out.

Chapter 1-2 summary:
Vandalism of his restaurant is what Atlas experiences, yet choses not report to authorities. Him and Lily had an encounter on that morning, and Atlas is waiting for a message from his first love. He hopes for a second chance with her, after her recent divorce with her ex-husband Ryle.

chaelan.villacin Lily tries to avoid thoughts about her unexpected meeting with Atlas, and becomes overwhelmed. She worries for the reaction of Ryle if she were to start a relationship once again with Atlas. For their relationship was not quite a happy one. 2y

A theme within these chapters is fear of starting something new and how it may affect an individuals life. This is present for Lily is afraid to start something she had experience once before, and worries it may affect the life she has now.
