When a Bolshevik tribunal deems him an unrepentant aristocrat, indomitable Count Rostov is sentenced to house arrest in a grand hotel across from the Kremlin. The erudite count is now forced to watch from an attic room while tumultuous decades of Russian history take place outside the hotel's doors.
